ParticipantTo the person riding across the upriver side of Key Bridge at 6:20 this morning – :thumbsup. From my heated car seat I saw the temperature was 7°F.

ParticipantSince I’m going to get ice/snow/crusted out tomorrow morning, I decided to stay up and drink beer and eat Girl Scout cookies. I think that’s a reasonable alternative.

ParticipantHope everyone makes it in okay. Conditions were distinctly suboptimal. On roads where the plows went around parked cars, those lanes are now impassable.

ParticipantThe ride this morning, although slushy, was pretty freaking awesome. This was my first morning commute in a while that was above freezing.
I did go out of my way to avoid the Shirlington pedestrian bridge (AKA, the bridge of icy death).
The ride home will be interesting with the slush freezing back up and the wind (oh the wind).

ParticipantGreat commute this AM. Exactly what I needed following three consecutive days of sleaze rides (work and snow related).
Happy Pete.

ParticipantDefinitely nice morning. Seemed warmer than the 20 degrees WAMU had promised. No unavoidable ice. Yay!

Who’s tired of standing on Metro raise your hand? Just as I thought no empathy from the seated riders.

Yes, it was much warmer. 36F at 6:15 when I left the house. It is funny how stubbornly the weather apps insisted (in the hourly forecasts) that temps would be in low to mid twenties by 7am despite temps obviously not dropping as fast as predicted last night. (Or getting below freezing at all.)

ParticipantIt’s almost unbelieveable how much better I feel when I ride my bike to work. I haven’t done so for the past 5 days due to snow and ice (#%&@! slicks!), but rode a truncated version today (11.9 miles). Being away for 5 days is a long enough period for the contrast to become so readily apparent. I’m so jazzed right now I’m having a real hard time concentrating on what I’m paid to do.

ParticipantI’m so glad I found the alternate route that lets me avoid the MVT (Thanks again DismalScientist, iirc). Like Vern it makes me feel so much better getting in on a bike. Another thing I noticed as I was getting changed downstairs after my ride in … my cold tolerance has gone way up. I’ve always been a reasonably hardy fellow, but in the past 13°F would be daunting and unpleasant, but this morning I thought nothing of it and laughed at the ice in my beard. Even the 0°F last week I saw on a ride wasn’t that bad. I haven’t really changed the way I dress recently, but I seem to be getting somewhat immune to the cold, at least on the bike. I suppose how you feel is largely in your mind. Anyone else finding that things aren’t as cold as they seemed to be in the past?

ParticipantI’m frustrated as hell. I can’t commute right now because of the trail conditions. I could possibly make it to DC going worththeweb’s route, but then going up the Capital Crescent is also a pain when it’s not cleared very well. Not being able to get in my miles has made me a serious grumpus. Getting home and piddling around in Old Town isn’t really doing it for me.
grrrrrrr.

Was the W&OD from Reston east ok with slicks? Seemed ambitious to me this AM (I rode a brief piece on my MTB in my *failed* attempt to go mountain biking), but I didn’t have any problem with the [non-studded] knobbies, so maybe slicks would also work ok.

I didn’t try…I took the Metro to East Falls Church and then cycled to Crystal City via Custis…Ballston. ..Four Mile Run and then hit 4MR trail at Shirlington.
