Today I learned that going tubeless with tires not rated for tubelessness was probably not the most optimal life choice for me.

I wimped out and took metro today.

It was a fantastic reminder how much better my bike commute is in pretty much every way (faster, cheaper, more pleasant, healthier, better for the environment).

I wimped out (and gave in to my now-two-day-long headache) and unscheduledly telecommuted. For my troubles, I got to witness the 2 year melt down over wanting to put his VERY poopy diaper back on his bum. As my husband is talking this out with him, this exchange happens:

Husband: Now, remember we talked about this. Why does your body make poop?
Son: Because I need them on my bum.

If it weren’t for the fact that I had to change said diaper, it would have been totally worth it.

Nice commute this AM – clearly the rest of this week will be very low mileage, given the paucity of options for me to ride home (read – I only have one option – Key Bridge), but I got to ride in with KayakCyndi, who passed by entry point on the Custis (Quincy) right as I merged onto the path.

Now I also want/need an Ogre and a set of studded tires (the ride down the Lee Highway hill through the slush on my 32mms was occasionally exciting).

As I got back a paltry $1 in change from the parking attendant out of an original $20 bill yesterday, I suddenly remembered why I ride.

We seem to have found the breaking point for cyclists at the kids school. I was the only bike I saw there this morning. But my kids were fine. I make sure they face backwards in weather like this to cut down on wind and they were chattering away (when they get cold they get quiet).

The kids should ponder rules 5 and 9. Besides, silence is golden.

It was fine this a.m., though the toesies are still defrosting. I’m a bit concerned about the ride home. Same temperature, but the ride into the wind always takes a toll.

As an aside, a big shout out to Uncle Joe for the great shovelling job by the Naval Observatory, and some disappointment that the Brits cannot see clear to meeting up with the Italians on the last 100 feet of sidewalk separating you guys. Wot wot?

That’s why they face backwards. Quieter for me.

    Aaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!

Drove this morning. Had chores and appts chained together. WHY do people drive to work?? It was horrible! Just horrible!

My husband took the kids to school on the bakfiets, in the cold, with a not-so-working-motor (though he usually turns it off these days anyways, because he’s hardcore).

I don’t think kids noticed the cold under the rain cover. 2-year-old was still coatless and neither wanted the blanket touching them.

Good commute in, no ice to speak of on the Custis. I did wimp out and do the short commute into work, so I did not give the weather enough time to freeze my hands or feet. God bless the person who invited Bar Mitts and chemical warmers though… this is becoming quite excessive temperature-wise for a poor southern european! ;)

I don’t think the temperature is even an issue anymore. I basically ignore it. Its the sand, salt, ice, snow, roads bleached so white can’t quite tell if dusting of snow or brine, pot holes, wind and anything else I’m missing that seems hell bent on seeing me fall off my bike that is getting me to the breaking point.

I weep for what I so recently took for granted – smooth pavement. Its like I’m riding on some frozen, pot hole riddled, beach boardwalk, hell scape.

Also, hipsters. They are the worst.

We ride so that, come the warmer weather in a month or so, we will have what the fat, doughy fair-weather riders lack: a layer of hard muscle underneath the fat.

Also, everyone should get off my lawn!

    :p
