ParticipantDreary but fine for the most part. Went down (lightly) over a bridge that I discovered was coated in ice

ParticipantDreary and chilly, walked Trollheim because of the ice and my scaredycat-ness.

I didn’t walk the Trollheim, but I did take it extra slow and did feel the wheels slip a little once. Trollheim and all its sibling wooden bridges on the MVT deserve caution.

I didn’t even bother with the Trollheim and decided I would rather cross the GWP and proceed up through downtown than deal with another boardwalk bridge. Earlier in my ride at the Daingerfield Island boardwalk bridge, I watched a guy in front of me slide all over the place and proceed to walk. I figured I would slow down a ton and unclip one foot. I made it further than he did, but not by far. As soon as those boards were slightly off level, my bike literally just slid out from underneath me horizontally. Since I was going so slow and had a foot unclipped, I wasn’t injured and the bike appeared fine. But the rest of the way was a painfully slow walk.
Who knows what happened to those before or after me. I tried warning a guy heading toward it at a fairly fast speed because there was really no way to avoid going down with anything short of a mountain bike or studded tires–even then, it was just a sheet of ice.
My hope is that they have warmed up since this morning since the weather shows it hit 38 degrees. Fingers crossed. If anyone has done Trollheim this afternoon and wants to share a report, that would be awesome. *Fingers crossed*

Brave man. I watched someone go down right in front of me (literally 10 meters or so)… and this helped me decide to walk. Had trouble keeping my footing on the wooden planks while making sure the rider was ok (he was).

ParticipantDamn I was slow this AM (will not belabor the excuses – I think most can be attributed to not having done the inbound commute in a while, plus cold and wind)
Determined to take the (off to the side behind construction, so no cars) lane on Maine, and then a Copenhagen left at 7th – but the construction made that difficult, and the traffic was light, so I did a vehicular left onto 7th.
Really looking forward to improved infra when The Wharf if further along.

I feel you. I was pretty slow too. The wind definitely help, but it did help my ride home last night.
But hey, what doesn’t kill us….

ParticipantToday was bright and beautiful…
Yesterday was even better as I saw ACPD ENFORCEMENT AT THE INTERSECTION OF DOOM! YAY! Did anyone else see it? Did anyone see actual enforcement being done? When I went through, the drivers obediently obeyed the lighted no turn sign, and I didn’t have time to wait to see if anything happened.

Yes, I saw it. They had a red suv or maybe it was a red car, pulled over and were exchanging things through the window when I rode by. Since they started this enforcement a few months ago, I have really noticed that motorists seem much more aware of cyclists and are yielding more as appropriate. It’s a pleasant change.

ParticipantI’ve seen plenty of enforcement. What I haven’t seen is any evidence that the enforcement is against failure to yield to those in the crosswalk or red light running. Every time I’ve seen a car pulled over it has been for going straight across Lee from the left hand turn lane on northbound Lynn, which does nothing to address Doom, especially since that lane feeds directly into another left hand turn lane.

ParticipantI had a pleasant ride in this morning, but saw something strange in the Potomac on my way over the 14th Street Bridge. There were two things swimming quickly in the water looking broad with a white line of wake going behind them. At first I thought maybe it was a couple dolphins, but I didn’t see a dorsal fin and doubt they’d be up this far. I stopped to chat with another rider who was looking at the same things and we both had no idea what we were looking at. She thought they might be rays of some kind. Whatever they were, it was an exciting break from the routine. Anyone else see them?

ParticipantI got to ride through unexpected snow. It was the best kind — enough snow to feel like you’re riding through snow, but not enough to effect visibility, and warm enough nothing was sticking. Yay!

I had a late morning commute and had the same experience. But the wind is already becoming wicked out of the north and west.
