You could lose an digit to frostbite getting sweaty doing 5x5s at 110%!

    Wouldn’t that make it a sweaty 5×4?

Haha, true. I’m sure many around here have proper SPD-style cycling winter boots for the really cold temps, but yeah I don’t.

I don’t have full boots, but I’ve been using the Gore Windstopper socks for a couple seasons now. They work very well. I wear them over a pair of wool socks. The fit isn’t great, they can be a bit baggy in the heel, but they keep my toes from being frost bitten on even the coldest mornings. And at $40-50, they are a lot less expensive than dedcaited boots.

Me riding with Tim at his pace would truly be remarkable. Would likely be possible only if there was a hill that would yield the gravitational boost necessary to keep up with him.

I set a new “personal chilliest” this morning at 13 degrees. Still, a good ride.

My commute these days takes me past the Reflecting Pool (Lincoln Memorial), around the Washington Monument, and past the Smithsonian museums. Very pleasant places to ride. While I look forward to warmer weather, I’ll miss having the roads / walkways to myself.

Earlier morning commute than usual for me. Shorter because I didn’t want to be late for a conference call.

Completely shocked that I did not suffer the cold a great deal. Maybe BAFS is having its perverse effects on me already?

So much nicer to ride in. I don’t have to worry about traffic or DC issuing me a parking ticket for my vehicle’s safety inspection sticker being 4 days out of date. It’s funny how good they are about ticketing the little stuff, yet always seem to miss the vehicles parked in the bike lanes half the time.

Anyway, nice morning albeit I learned my new rain jacket even with a light underarmout shirt underneath is quite warm.

Excellent Monday morning commute, shorter route for [yet another] conference call, but still pleasant given the absence of serious traffic and mild temperatures…

My regular bike gloves (not winter specific) were perfectly fine this am; most everyone who passed me actually warned me first; I passed two other bikers* (!!!!); and a cab AND a Prius stopped to let me pass safely through the Intersection of Doom.

I kinda feel like I won the lottery.

    * Yeah, ok. They were both loaded down with cargo.

A lovely commute this morning, despite the dreary gray. I was afraid I’d overdressed; those fears were unfounded.

Also it turns out pedaling is a lot easier when your pedal doesn’t look like this:

That pedal has no bearing on the enjoyment of your ride.

The ball of my left foot would like to disagree with you.
