Between bringing in goodies for the office (that some of you left at the Hains Point 100, shhh) and nearly breaking my face walking down the stairs with the dog this morning, my ride this morning was in a malodorous silver tube. Looking at the forecast for the rest of the day, I regret nothing.
You could have stayed at home and switched all the components over to the new mountain bike frame…

ParticipantI’m home with the kids today. I had hoped to get over to the hardware store to grab a few cable ties to install the computer on my new bike, and maybe a nut and bolt to put on the rear light, but dragging the kids out in this weather seems unnecessarily cruel.
Looking forward to tomorrow’s commute, since no one will be in the office and I can take the long way (new bike definitely needs a lap around Haines Point).

That’s looking like Saturday’s activity for now.
There’s no one in the office, I’m here in town anyway, why waste the leave?

ParticipantOh bother.
Today’s blustery commute was brought to you by Winnie The Pooh:

ParticipantI took the long way through Rock Creek Park today. Love the new bike. Don’t know if it’s the steel frame or just my imagination, but I feel like it’s so much smoother over the bumps than the aluminum Giant. I was a little irritated that NPS has closed off the Hains Point loop – I was hoping to get a lap in before work, though with the wind maybe it’s just as well I didn’t.

ParticipantSave for the weather, this week has been really nice concerning traffic, as it seems like everyone is staying home in the mornings.
This morning I had the (pleasure) of going headfirst into a strong wind that 1) made me feel like I was frozen in place and 2) made it very difficult for me to breathe. I know that I was moving (my speedometer was laughing at my single-digit pace), but for some reason when it gets cold and there’s a strong headwind in my face (biking or walking), I have problems breathing unless I shield my face with a facemask or scarf or hold my hand in front of my face. I know it has something to do with air pressure, but I don’t know the mechanics of it.

It could be the (lack of) humidity too. When it’s cold, I seem to breathe way better if I pull my gator up over my mouth. Sort of recycling your own humidity that way by breathing through the cloth.

ParticipantCold, tired, and gusty head winds, but it was still nice to be back on the bike.
Also, I got handle bar mirrors for Chirstmas, so I spent half the ride trying to get them adjusted. I already like them better than the glasses-mount mirror I tried, but it’ll be a while before it becomes a reflex to check them.

ParticipantNo work, so I went for a ride this morning. I saw 4 bikes between Reston and East Falls Church.
I had checked the trees for wind before leaving, but obviously I should have looked longer. I almost got knocked down a couple of times.

I heard some serious gusts before getting out of bed this morning…I figure I rode yesterday in the snow and rain, so taking a day off for wind isn’t unreasonable. Plus, driving isn’t bad when there is no traffic and all the parking spots at the office are open.

ParticipantHere’s a very interesting, and important, article about dehydrating in the cold.

Be careful out there!

Yeah, I’m certainly feeling it tonight after a loooong ride where I hardly drank anything while riding, just at my rest stops.

I think this is a really important observation. I’ve been trying to force myself to drink more — my biggest annoyance with winter riding is dry eyes, which might be due to not enough water after a ride. Or maybe I should switch to ski goggles…
