A Rear Fender works wonders for the cracktil zone.
Even I succumbed and installed one on the dedicated precipitation bike.

ParticipantPleasant commute, nice to ride with some sun!
Is it just me or is today particularly chilly and windy?

It isn’t just you. I got icicles on the beard from my breath alone this morning (usually it takes precipitation of some kind to get icicles to form). It was a nice ride though. I saw the sun rise over the Potomac at Cameron Run which was quite a beautiful sight. I would have taken a picture, but I didn’t want to have to take off the gloves to do it. I saw a surprising number of cyclists this morning, my informal count before 14th Street Bridge was 12. Glad to see more adherents to the Rule 5 and Rule 9 way of life out there.

Why would anyone have to “succumb” for a dedicated precipitation bike? Seems to me that would be item 1 on the “to install” list for such a ride.

ParticipantGreat ride into work this AM. Riding Trollheim was icy but not difficult.
A good day, and did not even feel that cold.

Funny you should mention not feeling that cold… I thought I was pretty adequately dressed for the weather and was warm enough when riding in. However, when I got to work to change, I noticed that my stomach was ice cold and quite red… I guess I need to perhaps start pinning an extra piece of windproof fleece to the lower front part of my jacket when it is this cold? I do not want to put on another full layer because then I would have definitely been too hot.

I generally wear a windproof vest with netting in the back. It does a good job of keeping the trunk warm without overheating. This morning I was quite comfortable on my 1hr 15 min ride.

ParticipantAfter another damn bout of illness (walking pneumonia this time) I had to reluctantly store the bike for a few weeks while the body recuperated. Clean bill of health yesterday morning from the doc though, so I’m back on the bike this morning. I was slow, my legs felt like jelly, it was 18 degrees when I left the house and I couldn’t stop grinning.

It’s like putting a diaper on your bike.

I think the Snob’s term might be a slightly better metaphor: http://bikesnobnyc.blogspot.com/2009/04/individualism-innovation-or-absurity.html

Exactly, we prefer to not just have poop dripping all over.

ParticipantMy anecdotal evidence suggests that drivers are just dehydrated imbeciles. Add water, and the true stupidity can bloom. Apart from that, it was a pretty fun wet commute.

ParticipantBeyond the fog and mist and wet roads, a pleasant and warmish commute.
Oh, and Gabba jerseys are most excellent in this weather.
