Participant… Was harrowing. It’s like people took a big giant stupid pill. Cases in point:
– Lady who ran me off Little Falls st because you’re so important that you can’t wait 10 seconds for oncoming traffic and pass safely. I hope you have a stereotypically terrible Monday, you terrible human being.
– doofus going 40 on Oak Street in Vienna. Did you not read the part about the freezing rain and untreated roads? Also, that’s a 25 mph residential street.
– all the putzes on Gallows in a great big hurry not noticing that A BUS IS STOPPING IN FRONT OF YOUR FACES
Pah.

ParticipantThis morning was that annoying gray area between “I need full rain gear” and “I just need the water-resistant stuff”. Went with full rain gear, but had one too many layers and was a bit too warm. At least I was dry when I got to work.

Had this issue too, went with water-resistant stuff since I don’t have rain pants anyway. I was comfortable and not sweaty and only ended up with a damp butt, and everything has dried out already.

ParticipantTook roads instead of trails today, and wished I had mounted my road tires instead of keeping my studs. How was I to know: “freezing rain! Hazardous road conditions! School delays! We’re all gonna die!” Whatevs.

ParticipantAfter getting a lot of heat for opening on time last week, DCPS opened two hours late today which meant I could ride in the rain at 10 instead of riding in the rain at 8. I can tell we’re in a good place with clothing because the kids were in a good mood and chatting the whole ride. When they’re uncomfortable, they get quiet. I wore my new rain paints and aside from a little upper body sweat (which, to be fair, happens to me pretty much regardless) I was nice and dry.

ParticipantGood ride. In Gabba we trust. Truly exceptional.
Now if they only made Gabba material shoes…

Hey, whatever happened to your plan to just leave the studs on until spring?
I am just hoping that I don’t wake up to especially slick roads, because I don’t want to remount those wheels in the dark.
Going from 25c GP4000S tires to my winter standby Schwalbe Durano 28c tires was bad enough (slower), but they are super sticky and are great at not flatting when the roads are full of debris.

Yeah…the honeymoon’s over. I’m hoping to ride the fixie tomorrow, taking the road route if need be.

Ha! My “fast” tires on my commuter are 37s! You must be much more sensitive to rolling resistance than I am. I do notice the difference on my studs, which are 40s and quite knobby. And the fixie is faster on 25s, but the ride is much bumpier.

well that didn’t take long!
I love what the studs do, and they look totally badass, but the rolling resistance is oppressive day after day. To be fair, I tire of the snow and ice before I tire of the studs.

ParticipantGreat ride in with the tailwind. How is it that five days off the bike has reduced my eliteness by over 50% – EXPONENTIAL ELITE DECAY – WTF?

ParticipantGlorious ride in today…
Quite a few cyclists out – nice to greet my fellow humans with a cheerful “Good Morning!” on a bike than the two word greeting I find myself using when in the car.
And as a bonus, while crossing Memorial Bridge, I stopped to watch a pair of Bald Eagles circle a few times over the river before heading north towards Roosevelt Island. Sadly, they were gone before I could get my camera out.

Ditto on being off a few days (well, not counting my BAFS near-sleaze rides) due to work travel. But no tailwind. In fact, my northwest-by-northern morning commute that’s 85% alongside the Potomac River was greeted by a consistent headwind. After dealing with this the whole way, I’m anticipating a ride home where I could just raise a sail and probably never need to pedal once until the one steep hill by my house. If the wind changers direction, I will know that the BAFS Gods are against my team.
