Powerful Pete
ParticipantAlways surprised (not certain why I should be) at the vitriol reserved for cyclists amongst some of the car crowd…

ParticipantThe problem probably isn’t water per se, but contamination that has water in it. I’ve had this problem with shifters, and eventually had to have them totally disassembled and thoroughly cleaned.

ParticipantStayed off the trails this a.m. The roads were generally fine as long as you exercised some caution. I’ll second the cyclocross tire recommendation someone made on the trail thread.

ParticipantThe commute started out nicely. I didn’t see anyone else on two wheels until I go to the Airport and only saw a handful of joggers and dog walkers. The solitude was nice. The MVT is still crunchy, but this morning it seems as though it is more rutted than last night. South of Alexandria is alright (and the sections in Alexandria South of the power plant seeem to be plowed), but the section by the airport gave me some slippery moments. The worst parts are the bridges where there is no ice (so my studs do nothing to help) and fish-tailing and a wandering front wheel gave several close calls. The worst by far was the 14th Street Bridge ATL which nearly had me on the ground a few times. I’m still amazed I stayed upright. I envy you Arlington folks with your plowed pathways.
Any thoughts on an alternate? Has anyone gone across the Memorial Bridge today? If so, are the walkways plowed? If not, is it legal to bike on the plowed lanes? Also, is there a good way to get to the Pentagon so I can ride through Crystal City and Alexandria on plowed streets?

From the January 2015 Trail Conditions thread:

Take Eads Street to 12th to get over to Long Bridge Drive. Continue on Boundary Channel to the exit to the parkway north. Take Washington Blvd bike path across the 2 crossings of the parkway and over the south sidewalk of Memorial bridge. Sidewalks down the middle of the mall from the Lincoln memorial to Washington memorial. This way is entirely clear (well, not the bike lanes on Eads or Long Bridge Dr–just take the street) except for the crap along the Washington Blvd sidepath. It certainly beat the 2 miles of crap along the MVT and the 14th Street bridge.
And yes, the Memorial Bridge downstream sidepath is very well cleared.

Although I’ve never done it myself, I’m pretty sure that it is legal to ride in the roadway across Memorial Bridge. Sounds like it’s unnecessary today though with the downstream sidewalk cleared.
The usual routes to Pentagon are through LBJ Grove (from 14th Street Bridge) or the Route 27 trail (from Memorial Bridge), but I can’t speak to the current condition of either of those trails.

ParticipantThe Route 27 trail from the North Pentagon parking exit to the Memorial bridges is icy and rutty. But–it’s fairly short. South of there, I do not know. Prior to snowfall, there were poles on both sides of the sidewalk, perhaps an aid for snowplowing activities. One can always hope, but I don’t know the condition of the trail on the west side of the Pentagon proper.

I did my sleaze ride right after midnight last night and decided I wasn’t commuting in weather this cold without chemical toe warmers and ski goggles.
*goes to Amazon to buy chemical toe warmers and ski goggles*
