ParticipantNot surprisingly, there were a lot more runners and bikers than there was a few weeks ago…the New Year’s Resolution crew was out in full force. I loved the full moon and then the red sunrise.

ParticipantThe forecast on WTOP for tomorrow is cold with an 80% of over-the-top hyperbole.

ParticipantI’m happy to report that I’ve completed a fixed-gear commute with no blood and an only nominal amount of tears.

ParticipantThe wind this morning was like a free “upgrade” from my 17t cog to a 15t.

The optimist in me wanted to think they were all BAFS participants. I think your reality check is right not just because they all looked unfamiliar, but really because my slow self managed to pass all of them and I wasn’t passed once (and headwinds or not, I was dragging today big time).

ParticipantI got a “nice bike” from a friendly cyclist, who then added “it’s like a four-wheel-drive Suburban”. I love this. The elBoda is our Surburban and the bakfiets is our minivan.
Then I got smacked in the face by a dead branch on the TR Bridge. It was stuck in some vines and the wind gusted at just the right time to swing it into my oncoming face with no warning. Knocked by glasses off, but no damage. I tore out the branch and threw it onto the island. But I will call NPS (again) to explain (again) the need for them to maintain this area. Ugh.

ParticipantPleasant enough commute with the wind pushing me along this AM. This evening may be more challenging. Here’s to praying to the wind gods to shift things around in time for 17:30 office departure time!
A wee bit concerned by the possibility of temperatures in the teens Thursday. Looked it up and converted to C and yelped.
This FS thing will be more exciting and help me build temperature fortitude far in excess to what a soft Southern European should have to…

Me too. Sadly, it only felt that way going uphill.

Don’t worry, I never have the fortune of riding into winds en route to work and with winds en route home. So it’s bound to switch directions probably around 4-5pm. If it doesn’t, I’m contemplating wearing one of those squirrel suit things people go gliding in because I think that combined with an upright position could give me a near-record pace home.

ParticipantGravelly Point and Hains Point were extra brutal this morning. AVOID POINTS.

ParticipantI could not handle a lap of Hains Point this morning on my first day back at work in the new year. I need to do a lap or three this evening… not looking forward to it…

It gave me a surprising smack on the helmet. I meant to post a warning once I got in, but didn’t get the chance.

ParticipantDespite buying a new bike for all-weather commuting, I haven’t yet had the chance to get the new wheelset and studded tires yet…figure I’ll be fine on my Randonneur 32s tomorrow morning, but may have to throw the bike on the bus in the PM.

ParticipantI’m hoping for just enough snow tomorrow to amuse the kids and not enough snow to force me off the Xtracycle.
