Days like this are perfect for bikeshare. Bus or metro in only as far as you need to to get to a station. Bikeshare to the rescue!

I don’t know if I could manage a mtn wheel set and an angle grinder on a cabi but the thought did cross my mind!

Lol mstone – you’re right. I was going to add a caveat to my post cautioning that about a million other people would have the same idea, so docking at the other end could be . . . problematic. Yes, another bike is the way to go.

Americancyclo – that’s a lot to carry. Good luck.

I saw the report of water above the rails and immediately thought, “those metro-riding folks are screwed this morning”.

Now, I’m really interested in seeing the data for CaBi usage increases around transit delays like this. I wonder how much it actually spiked this morning.

i was already cranky about having to walk to metro with power tools and a wheelset, then the train delays, so 1:45 after I leave my house, I’m at work, and I still need to metro (with powertools and wheelset) up to where my bike was last locked up to see if it is there and recoverable. hooray for long lunches

probably not that much–there isn’t all that much spare capacity in the system

I’m hearing the constant sounds of honking 12 stories down on K Street.

What little capacity existed was probably zapped up. I saw folks complaining on Facebook about Uber being 4x the regular price. I didn’t even realize there was a water main break until I got into the work. Oh the joys for frozen toes in exchange for consistent commuting times.

Anecdotally speaking, I saw a lot more CaBi bikes that I would expect for a morning in the temperature range it was today. It must have been Metro avoidance. It was a nice ride in this morning. With the humidity as high as it was I could see my breath and my beard ended up quite wet by the time I got into work. When I got into DC the traffic seemed exceptionally bad for a morning — must have been all the diversions from the water main break area. Thankfully, being on a bike means traffic is something you notice, but not something you’re stuck in.

Hooray for bike commuting. I didn’t even bother to look at any local news this AM. Didn’t have to, b/c, well, even if I had, metro delays and highway-centric traffic reports don’t affect me in the slightest. :D

My commute was heavenly. The weather was just about perfect. I’d take this every day. Now I’ve just got my fingers crossed that the rain clears out by the end of the day as predicted.

I didn’t check the CaBi website earlier, but right now, some of the downtown stations do seem to have more open docks than usual. Some of the downtown stations are full like they always are on weekday mornings. But I’m surprised to see at least a few stations with multiple open docks in the McPherson Square, Metro Center and Gallery Place areas.

DDOT has said that they plan to add more docks to existing downtown stations. That will help, but they really need to add a super-sized station, perhaps in Franklin Square. There is plenty of space for an extra-large station, maybe with 40-50 docks, and there is certainly demand for a large station at that location. It would also ease up demands on the nearby stations at Farragut, McPherson, NY Ave., Metro Center and Gallery Place. The National Park Service is probably resistant to the idea. (What else is new?) I’ve posted about it on the crowdsourcing map and I’ve sent in a few emails about that location. NPS is probably saying that a CaBi station would detract from the aesthetics and tranquility of the park, while ignoring the buses on I and K Streets, the food trucks on 13th St. and the broken fountains in the middle of the park. (I’m not complaining about the buses or the food trucks. Just pointing out that it doesn’t make sense for NPS to make these types of objections when the buses and food trucks are right there too.)

I’ve also sent in suggestions about a downtown CaBi corral, but that might be too expensive because of the personnel required. They have the corrals on special occasions only. Perhaps they could set one up on emergency days like today. Can’t they work out an arrangement where DDOT/Alta opens up a corral at Freedom Plaza on short notice, with preparations made in advance?

There’s really no point in going to the trouble–you can’t fit 100k commuters onto a couple thousand bikes, even in a bad comedy sketch. The effort involved in setting something like that up would almost certainly be better spent on something with more surge capacity.

I’m also not a fan of super stations. I bike because it gets me door to door. Not door to five-blocks-away. I think we would be better served by more stations, not bigger stations. (With the caveat that if there’s a location where you consistently have large influxes of people – Verizon Center? National Mall? – and/or there’s a location where you can’t spread the stations out – Navy Yard? – a bigger station might be warranted.

Still sounds like Carmageddon down there.

probably not that much–there isn’t all that much spare capacity in the typical commuter’s brain.
