Do I need to moving really fast to upshift the crankset?
No, but if the front chain ring is under load (heavy torque or hill climbing) then it is less likely to shift well. The gears on your back wheel are most often referred to as the cassette.
Can you see the front derailleur move when you actuate the shifter?

I always thought this was a freewheel. Though it certainly is a pain to unscrew the whole thing off the hub, and take it apart without losing bearings all over the floor, just to change the size of a few cogs. Maybe they could come up with something that makes this easier.

Oh but they have my olden friend.
Freewheels are all in one with the bearing and pawls in the cluster. More modern device is the cassette with the gears fitting on to a splined shaft that contains the bearings and latch and pawl system. With a cassette setup you remove a locking ring and slide the gears off without disturbing anything else.
THey have also come up with this device called a cellular telephone.

Never mind. The crankset shifters work the opposite way from the cassette (?) shifters. All is good now.

ParticipantI know we’ve been over the subject about one thousand times, but seriously on the trails in broad daylight people don’t need their lights on full power. One guy going south on MVT this morning must have had a 500+ lumen light running.
On the plus sight, definitely saw FFG again. Still sporting his santa hat.

ParticipantIt was warmer this morning than the forecast suggested – I was even borderline overdressed. Made for a very pleasant, refreshing ride in.

ParticipantTaking metro today to recover my bike. Water main break at metro center means this is going to be a long challenging commute. Ugh wish I was on the bike.

Days like this are perfect for bikeshare. Bus or metro in only as far as you need to to get to a station. Bikeshare to the rescue!

days like this are why you have more than one bike. bikeshare would maybe be helpful if you’re one of the first of the 10k people with that idea.
