jabberwocky
ParticipantBack on the bike this morning after a week off to recover from a respiratory infection. It was glorious, wind and all.

ParticipantI have no idea what you guys are talking about. Those of us commuting from the North and West simply got more powerful overnight because of clean living and moral rectitude.

ParticipantThe wind definitely slowed me down (added about 15 minutes to my normal time), but I didn’t realize how much it was impacting the ride until I got to a section of my commute where I reverse direction for a short distance. I was flying with no effort. I really hope that the winds don’t shift today, would be glorious to have that kind of a tail wind going home. If the National Weather Service is right, it just might happen …

ParticipantI have a flat.
Luckily, it was just at the end of my commute, but unluckily, I’m not in a position to fix it. I need to get it to the bike shop anyway, but that wasn’t part of today’s very busy plan. *sigh*

ParticipantWindy but pleasant. All good until I had to cross the 14th Street Bridge. That was… exciting.

It’s not like there aren’t railings there. Rule 5, man.

ParticipantWith the wind at my back I decided to take the long way in down the WOD. Then I got to the MVT. Hahahahahahha, sucka!

Touche’!
I think I am getting old. I am also, increasingly, a mega-scaredy cat on downhills.

ParticipantWhoa. I felt chillier this morning than yesterday. Wind is still there… but… Rule #5!

ParticipantI saw Santa on the MVT this morning. I hope that white beard is helping to keep Fast Friendly Guy warm.

I saw him this morning by the turn to the 14th street bridge – I think he saw me – I was hard to miss in a neon bright ski jacket from the George Bush the Elder era.

ParticipantThis was my first ride using Strava. Learned/confirmed some interesting things.
The ride was good – but my gloves are not quite adequate for this temp. Also had an equipment problem. Somehow right at the end of my ride my hand slipped (perhaps I was fiddling with my glove?) and I moved my crankset into 1st gear. I never shift the crankset, always running in 2nd gear and using the free wheel (terminology?) to shift. I tried to upshift back to 2, but could not. Do I need to moving really fast to upshift the crankset?

Anytime I have had problems shifting between chainrings, the front derailleur needed adjusting.

I second this. You may very well be able to get it back in the middle chainring in the front by shifting the shifter into the 2 position then applying a little more pressure to the shifter lever. Not so much that it clicks to the 3 position for the big chainring, but enough to put some extra tension on the cable and pull the dereailleur cage out a little more, enough to get the chain to move over to the middle chainring. Hope that helps. If it doesn’t and the front derailleur cage is moved over enough to hold the chain on the middle chainring even if it won’t shift it, you could always just pull the chain onto the middle chainring with your hands before you ride it again.
Oh, how I don’t miss finicky front derailleur adjustment. FD friction shifting w/ bar end shifters is heavenly. As long as the limit screws are set properly and I have proper-ish tension on the shifter cable, I can make other “adjustments” by simply moving the shifter lever a little more or a little less…
