ParticipantWhile the gearing on my fixie is too low for Hains Point or any sort of descent, it’s wonderful for the Friday Coffee Club Rollout.

ParticipantI love how winter has this mysterious way of throwing wind into my face on the way into work and the way home. Why lie, I bet the winds will be from the south tonight precisely because I will be riding that direction.
Other than that, i’ve figured out that my wool socks along with thermal shoe covers are the magic trick to enjoying a warm ride. Finally mastered most of the cold. Only a few more small modifications and I will be set. The black ice patches on the other hand were somewhat unexpected. Someone riding southbound warned me of a few ahead after narrow tunnel on MVT–thanks for that!

ParticipantI very much appreciated that it felt warmer than 35 F when I left the house today.

ParticipantHoly moly I realized that I am truly a Southern European on my commute in this morning. 35F felt very much like 35F to me. And as someone who does not really understand standard measurements, it felt a heck of a lot like almost freezing! :p
Sheesh I miss Italian winters…
On the whole my gear held up fine. This has been my coldest commute yet (ever)… and reinforces my willingness to be silly and participate in Frozen Saddles.

ParticipantThe wind this morning seemed to magnify the temperature. It felt colder at 32 this morning than it did back when it was 22. The the relentless headwind definitely kept it interesting …

ParticipantAwful combination of super warm hands this morning, cold feet, and some drunk guy in front of me zigzagging all over the place. Respect for being drunk at 6am, no respect for being drunk on a bike at 6am.
Hoping this evenings chapped-face extravaganza goes a bit better.

ParticipantStopped on the South Capital bridge to watch a Bell V22 Osprey hovering and flying around. Still amazed by those craft. Found it odd how loud it was when close but quiet as it got a luittle further away and started the tilt towards horizontal flights.

I noticed this too. I was colder yesterday morning than I was when it was 19F a couple of weeks ago. My morning commute was pretty miserable. And it was still cold and windy yesterday afternoon, so I (*GASP*) took the short way home!

ParticipantWhat I thought, based on radar, was a break in the rain that would allow me to eschew the more serious rain gear was actually not, so I donned the rain cape and put the rain covers on my panniers under the awning of my apt. building before leaving for work. Despite the rain, and in some ways because of it, it was a nice ride in, save for the near semi-Crazy Ivan situation along the MVT near the at grade crossing of the airport onramp. Fortunately, Ivan wasn’t totally crazy and saw me before completing his maneuver.

ParticipantWell, the good thing about being retired is that I don’t have to get on the bike and ride to work in this weather. Of course that’s also the bad thing.

Participant#67 at the monolith of doom this morning. Saw nobody on the WOD between vienna and falls church. A little slick, some wet leaves but overall not too bad of a commute.

ParticipantWas not nearly as bad out there as I was expecting. It wasn’t raining too hard and it really didn’t seem as cold as it has been. Even the kids weren’t complaining.

Wasn’t even very windy, although NE’ers usually make inbound downwind for me…

ParticipantAnyone else face 100% security check at work this morning?
