Yea, they lied on the forecast. Lied! My god it was cold this morning. My body warmed up pretty well, but my thighs and digits were pretty cooooold. And my shower at work doesn’t have adjustable temperatures, so it inevitably feels scalding hot.
Rule #5.
See, I knew there were advantages to growing up in Wisconsin (besides, of course, learning to milk cows blind-folded).

ParticipantI was really excited to bike in this morning. Had the tires all pumped up and everything ready for my hour-earlier-to-cycle wake time. I slept like CRAP last night
I grew up as a “rub some dirt on it” type of kid, out in the country, amazing parents, etc etc. The suspicion that my doctor has is that I’m having “mini panic attacks” at night. I wake up gasping for air with my heart racing. I know it’s not apnea, because I was diagnosed with that YEARS ago, and wear one of this silly masks, so it can’t be apnea. Night before last was my first night on Xanax, and….. OMG what a great night of sleep!!! So I was really looking forward to another awesome night of sleep last night, waking up nice and refreshed at 0:dark:30 and FINALLY getting a ride in (it has been weeks
). Sadly, it didn’t work out. I guess I’m adjusting to not taking Lunesta to sleep, which was what I was on before the Xanax now. It really sucks to get about 8+ hours of sleep and still not feel refreshed
Anyways, that’s all in the TMI category. I know most people would never share personal medical information, but I’ve learned so much about arthritis, sleep apnea, and other problems I’ve had that I feel compelled to share what I’ve learned. I know I’ve changed a few people’s lives by openly talking about my ailments and what treatments I’ve used. Arthritis and sleep apnea are both considered “silent diseases” (and apnea is quite lethal), so I always feel the need to encourage communication about them. Did you know that the CDC considers sleep disorders to be an epidemic!! Arthritis statistics aren’t any better. Unfortunately, both of these things can directly interfere with cycling, which turns in to a vicious cycle because cycling actually helps both of these things.

That was actually the problem–my fingers DID harden.

ParticipantDepends if you are angry for me blowing by you (I called the pass but between my muffled mouth and your muffled ears I’m not sure you heard me) 😮
Between Sterling Blvd & Church at about 7:25, I was in a red jacket, blue Cannondale, NCVC knickers, hauling some Strava-worthy butski trying to find a heater for my frozen fingers

Not me. No one passed me this morning and I was out later. People not passing me is more related to the Hinterlands location and Westerly direction more than my 12mph pace.

Did anyone report this? I passed it along to DDOT just now, but hopefully someone else mentioned it earlier this morning.

ParticipantPosted at 9:17 AM . Now from our reporter Eminva live on the scene – major lane hazard on Key Bridge. Cycle traffic backed up for yards. More at 11. Stay tuned to WABA / Bike Arlington for Cycle News as it happens.
Ain’t this forum wunnerful?

ParticipantLast commute of the year this year. I can’t ride tomorrow because of some after-work activities, and then it’s off to the Midwest for the holidays. I hope everyone has a great holiday themselves, and safe riding around here. This trip is going to make me desperately want a travel bike. I think I might take my pedals and shoes just in case I find myself in a bike shop…..
One fun story from yesterday’s commute…..I got dressed for my ride and was about to leave work but stopped off in the restroom. When I walked in and turned to the wall, I noticed that all of the sinks behind my turned on. As I spent my time there, I could hear them turning on and off the whole time, and then when I got a little closer to wash my hands, all the sinks were on again. I realized that the BikeArlington reflective vest I was wearing was giving the automatic sinks hell. They couldn’t handle the light. At least now I know it is very reflective!

ParticipantIt was very quiet this morning. I was 13 miles in before I saw another cyclist. The fog deadened the traffic sounds, and it was just peaceful. Nice for what’s probably my last bike commuting day this year. (Yay, holiday!)

ParticipantI decided to take Bikeshare this morning, as I still haven’t replaced my bike. It was nice. I always forget how slow those bikes are. 14th NW was a mess, as usual. The guy in front of me almost got hit by a car coming out of a driveway past construction equipment. I rode past the Bikeshare station by work, ready to head into the garage like usual. I can’t say that I really appreciate the weather – those bikes get awfully squirrely on wet pavement. But I did appreciate being on a bike again.
I did notice that you could see tracks in the wet road from at least two illegal u-turns on the block of PA Ave where I was hit last week. Glad to see DC is still making excuses rather than enforcing the law.
