Snapped my chain as I got out of the saddle to pass a few runners on the MVT. That “handlebar slapping, knees in face, 3 seconds of bronco bucking white knuckle hell” was not my prettiest moment in my cycling life. I managed to remove the link with my trusty multi-tool and hobble the 18 miles to work before realizing my foot was really swollen and since I didn’t use a Campy approved chain tool the chain is most likely toast. BUGGER!

That’s the potential downside of possessing super-human strength.

I actually had a morning commute on a Saturday, this one grad school-related for a site visit/field trip. Lovely ride out to Falls Church and back this AM. I was running late so had to push a little more than I would have otherwise, so I didn’t get as much of that “take in the beautiful September morning” experience as I would have liked, at least on the way out to Falls Church. I did a lot more of that on the way home on the constant slight downhill run on the W&OD back to Alexandria. 25 miles RT… wish I had time to go 50! :D

New record – four bikes with kids stacked up at the light on Q crossing New Jersey NW this morning. Two trail-a-bikes, my Xtracycle, and a hybrid with a rear seat. I knew two of them from the kids’ school.

The news here is that you own something non-Campy. How’d that happen?

The racks in front of my work building have been full almost every day since the start of the month. I think we set a new record today. It’s becoming a pain finding a parking spot, esp since some folks have baby seats or extra large cargo boxes on their bikes. Have been lobbying management to upgrade our racks but to no avail.

I shifted my schedule today, so instead of rolling past the Monolith at about 7:00 it was maybe 8:10. What a difference! Normally the count is less than 100 when I go by, today it was about 300. As a big bunch of us went thru the Intersection of Doom I saw a long line of cars waiting for us to clear so they could make the turn. Made me think, if they won’t fix the IofD for safety’s sake, surely they would fix it to get us out of the way of the cars we’re holding up.

New First Street cycletrack is getting quite a lot of use in short order

Can we call it a Protected Bike Lane? The language we use is important because often times the general public thinks of a cycletrack as a sporty, athletic velodrome where people race. We want to make biking as accessible to everyone as possible! Besides, PBL is much shorter to type than cycletrack….

A great point, although it also sounds like the hipsterazation of it. Go take the PBL to get your PBRs.

Are you projecting? It’s too early to start drinking…

I vote for cycletrack. PBL is another cryptic acronym for the in-crowd, and Protected Bike Lane sounds like gov-speak.

Would you mind expanding on that?

Do you not think that “cycletrack” sounds sporty?

“You can’t drink all day if you don’t start in the morning!”
