The National Weather Service report for Reagan National was that winds were calm at both the 6:52 and 7:52 readings. Where were you riding, or did you just finish your commute? ;)

I made it in rather late yesterday… 😮

And the commute this morning was… wet. :(

note to others – I work for HUD

The fact I have a place to stay suggests housing and the lack of urban development is the reason we came!

Some of the carriage trails have bike restrictions and they have the nicest no-bike signs I’ve seen.

The restrictions applied to a small fraction of the total trail inventory so it didn’t seem particularly burdensome.

Picked up my Surly from the shop last night and was all set to ride in this morning. It’s been a ~week since I commuted, so I was excited to finally get on the bike again.

……Until I turned on the news at 545 this morning and saw that some dumb motherf-ers thought it would be a good idea to carjack a police detective and then proceeded to shoot him several times as well as chase him in their car. Thankfully the officer is in the hospital and seems to be doing ok. MPD, Park Police, and I think PG County police had a huge area closed off for the ensuing manhunt including all of the roads that I use to cross Southern Ave to Suitland. Last I heard they had one of the dumb MFers in custody.

So I drove in, taking the beltway… and my hate for my commute and the fact that both my wife and I work in this shit hole has increased. Again.

Minus my little snafu in not double-checking the one way tunnel, today’s right was rather pleasant. Motorists almost entirely gave me three feet. A pedestrian on Key bridge at Whitehurst Crossing waited for me (heading into city) so I didn’t have to slow down at the narrow entry right after freeway exit, which was very kind of her. And well, everyone just seemed in a better mood than during yesterday’s monsoon. Hopefully the ride home will be equally pleasant. It also feels good given I had only ridden Monday and the previous Monday due to a work trip and meeting obligation.

The temptation to just keep biking past work was very strong this morning, but I resisted. What a gorgeous morning!

Some of my favorite biking ever was around the park and up Cadillac Mountain. Enjoy it.

Due to travel, bike repairs, lending out bikes, and a horrible tussle with this summer cold that’s going around, today was my first day back on my bike in a week and a half. MY BIKE. I filled up the tires and rode comfortably and fast in to work. It was AWESOME!!

I’ve started noticing that the morning commute is getting darker and darker at the start. Winter is en route.

    Shhhhhhhhhhh!!!

And yes, I’ve noticed, too. I’ve had to start using a light again at the beginning of the ride (actually for the past couple weeks).

Strange commute today. As I said in another thread, I’m getting ready to climb Mt. Washington, so I made a bunch of changes to my bike. I took the triple crank from my MTB and removed the big and middle chainrings and put it on my road bike, so I’ve got a 24t up front along with a 12-30 cassette. I removed the front derailleur and rear brake, and shortened the chain. I wanted to make sure the chain wouldn’t fall off, so I rode this odd contraction to work today. I was totally spun out in my top gear at 17 mph.

Everything worked fine. It should be fun going home, spinning up the Rosslyn hill, the S-curve, and the two sisters in 24×30 at 120 rpm without breaking a sweat.

The strangest thing about the bike was the silence–I replaced the creaking, dying freehub mechanism on my rear wheel with a new one that was almost dead silent. It’s very strange to coast and not hear a thing.

Last day of summer before the semester goes full swing for me. Had a morning chocolate croissant at a rare Wednesday DTSS coffee club. Took a trip down the CCT with jopamora and had my first visit to Hain’s Point. Was joking about doing laps to get up to a century (haha) and wound up doing enough laps to make my whole ride a first ever metric century for me! 4 and a half hours to go 63 miles. I was reasonably pleased considering that’s by far my longest ever ride and I didn’t really properly prepare (only brought water and a few fig newtons). Regardless, it was a great ride. A little sore but the legs actually feel okay. Giant turkey sandwich, power aide, protein bar and a bag of lays for recovery food and I’m a happy camper. Next stop a full 100 miles!

The trails were hard packed sand. I had 32 mm tires and had no problems.
