Many thanks for stopping. I hope the cyclist is doing okay, sounds like at least a solid concussion, probably Grade 2, but god only knows how long the poor guy was out on the ground. That sweeping turn is probably the second most dangerous spot on my commute next to the corkscrew of death, which has been rocking some real solid moldy leaf cover for the last couple of weeks.

Ugh. There was a piece in one of the recent bicycle magazines about being prepared for the inevitable…. that if you bicycle long enough you will come upon an accident. Apparently the Red Cross has a free smart phone app. I purchased a red cross based first aid app for humans, and one for dogs. One of the reasons I carry my itouch when I go for long rides.

Oh funny, its actually an advertisement. Page 4 of Bicycling January/February edition. Also recommends a first aid kit, carrying a phone so you can make the 911 call, and taking a class in First Aid. In many federal agencies, the agency gives regular first aid type classes as part of health and wellness, or the local red cross offers such classes. (and also think about a Road ID – and placed an ICE number on your phone (in case of emergency – what number you want someone to call))

I have been on the receiving end of this, on the ultimate frisbee field – bad bad hit that put me in the hospital. I believe I was cared for by a premed on the field, and then a friend drove me to the hospital. I always remember that – and in “pay in forward” fashion tend to carry first aid with me.

My morning commute sucked. Got all the way to work, literally at doorsteps and slid out on wet leaves on the last turn. Went down fast, as if on ice. Landed funny on my hip and knew I broke something. I laid on the ground unable to get up for about 10 min, finally a coworker walked by and called an ambulance. Had to be transported on stretcher.

Fractured my femur grand trochanter, hurts like hell. Won’t be able to do the Rapha Festive 500.

My next year’s resolution will be to not to break any more bones (last year it was my clavicle). Or at least learn to ride better and not fall off the darn bike again.

Ugh. Sorry to hear that – I think the world wasn’t ready for how a Festive 500 done entirely off-road on a fixed gear. Pete will have to step up to cover that division.

Heal quickly, but more importantly, heal up right. Don’t push yourself too hard out of this, if you had to pick a time of year to be laid up this isn’t a bad one. Looking forward to riding with you again.

That’s a longshot for me I might get the Fetish500 done this year, but it’ll likely be done with a lot of shorter rides done at weird hours of the morning.

This is awful news – I hope you rest up well over the end-of-the-year down time.

I assume this was the brick sidewalks + wet leaves in G-town?

My commute this morning was completely incident free. Perhaps I should wear Christmas Socks all the time.

I think that goes without saying.

Yep, it was in a brick courtyard in front of our building entrance. While i was laying on the ground i was surprised how slippery the brick was, it had a mossy, slimy coating. I shouldn’t have been riding in the courtyard, lesson learned the hardway.

    thx

bobco85, pfunkallstar, ehh, it was no trouble at all. I’m happy to assist another rider if need be.

Oh no. The first and only forum user I’ve met while riding is down. Was wondering why I hadn’t seen you on the trail. Heal quickly!

Hello KayakCyndi! If you are on the trail at the same time as dcv, I am often out there, too. What are you riding? Can you post a picture of it to this thread?

On page four of the same thread, you’ll see the bike I’m usually riding. (Although today I was on none of the above; had to ride my son’s mountain bike.) Say hello if you think you see me!

My morning was very nice. I actually got out early (around 5:20) from the house. Nice and cool and dark, and the streets were deserted. I was stopped waiting for a light in Fairfax City at 5:30 (yes, I didn’t even run the red on a deserted predawn street – it’s what you do when no one is looking, right?). An SUV pulls up next to me and rolls down his window. He was asking me about my Bike Arlington Blinky that I had in left hand side mesh pocket of my backpack, he said it really worked, and that he could see it from way up the street. We had a nice exchange; totally unexpected at 5:30 AM. I was glad I didn’t just run the light, he probably would have rolled down his window at the next light and told me to stop breaking the law.
