Welcome to kidical riding. With very few exceptions, I’m treated better by drivers when kids are on my bike — at least when drivers see the kids. A couple of times, a car has been behind me, being a bully, then pulls up to the point where they can see a kid in the box or on the front seat, and they back way off. I’ve even gotten some apologies at lights.
I’ve had the same experience. It’s sort of nice, but then I’m reminded that people think nothing of killing ME, they just balk at the kids. Kind of depressing when you look at it that way. I mean, I have no illusions that I’m even close to as cute as my kids, but I had always thought I had at least some value as a human being.

Well, without kids on your bike, you are non-kidical.
I wonder if there’s a market for a front-seat-with-fake-kid for us to attach to bikes when we are non-kidical.

Does the kid attachment have to be human?
(found this online, although the guy in the mirror reflection creeped me out until I realized it was on a television)

Because killing you is ok, but OMG think about the children!

ParticipantActually, my favorite was the guy who honked at me for taking the lane on a one-way road, then buzzed me, then drove REALLY REALLY SLOWLY past a double parked car.
When I caught up with him at the stop at the end of the block (you see how much I was holding him up?), I wanted to point out that my bike would scratch his paint, too.

It’s occurred to me lately that drivers like this are exhibiting what I understand to be bullying behavior. I wonder if we can some pages out of the anti – bullying play book in dealing with them.

ParticipantSo, I am at the intersection of Hummer and LRT, facing SB on Hummer having finally made it a habit to go vehicular style there on the way to the bus stop, enjoying the weather and waiting for the light to change, when I see a cyclist in a blue shirt turning left from east bound LRT to north on Hummer. As he goes around, I swear I heard him call out “Lord of the Mark!” He was either a deranged Tolkien fan, or one of you guys. Thanks for the call out!
Rest of the ride was pretty nice.

ParticipantWas greeted with a hearty “nice day for a ride!” by the FFX County PD officer on crossing guard duty at Westmoreland/Haycock, which was nice. In other news, my legs are bit more tired than normal after moving up from 71 gear inches to 74 gear inches on my fixie, so I was definitely dragging this morning.

ParticipantWhat a gorgeous morning! Too bad I had to go to work. Thanks to the gent that drafted and then took a long pull on the WOD towards Reston this morning, that was nice!

That was me, and I’m both of those things.

ParticipantToday was my first day taking the kids to camp on the Xtracycle. I missed a turn or two and ended up having to take the sidewalk on Georgia Ave for a bit, which is not ideal but not terrible. Biking uphill past the long line of idling cars waiting to drop kids off was sweet. It’s even better than crossing the bridge from Hains Point to DOE after morning laps and passing all the cars heading downtown.
I passed a mom and her son biking (perhaps to the same camp?). The kid, maybe 10, had a little mountain bike with sweet panniers. That’s excellent parenting.
I got hit in the face with a vine on the way home taking the sidewalk on 16th until the 14th St bike lane picked up. That wasn’t cool.
When I turned onto PA Ave I had to stop and check because I thought I forgot my badge, which i need to get into the building and turn my computer on, so I really can’t work without it. I had it, though, so i continued on.
I do not particularly appreciate the kids asking why I’m going so slowly up hills.

I tell my kids it’s because they get too much dessert, and they won’t anymore if they comment again. The threat’s usually good for one or two hills.
