No dilation, thankfully! Got drops, and my eyes haven’t felt this good in weeks. Three different kinds to pick up on the way home, though. While I was there, I looked at some Rudy Project sports glasses that can get prescription inserts; they would give better protection than my regular glasses do. They look pretty cool. Anyone tried them?
They have them at the eye doctor i see near eastern market, and i’ve tried on a few pairs, but not bought any. In the past they’ve run some pretty great specials like a helmet, bibs, jersey, or second pair of lenses for free. might be a good use of FSA money

Why do you need three different kinds of eye drops instead of just one? Also, what are the main ingredients used in them?
I’ve been using allergy eye drops (antihistamine and redness reliever, CVS brand) for the past 2 months, and they’ve been great when I’m wearing contacts. I mean, I now don’t have to stop in the middle of a ride because my eyes are burning because I started using the allergy eye drops instead of just normal eye drops. Seriously, I’ve been riding for years with red, irritated eyes by the time I returned home, and now it’s no longer an issue.
So, the doc says she thinks I have developed an infection because my eyes have been so beat up from irritation; hence three different meds:
1) Pataday (antihistamine)
2) Lotemax (anti inflammatory)
3) Erythromycin (antibiotic)I had been using the over-the-counter antihistamine drops (mine were Rite Aid brand), and those worked pretty well for a couple of weeks, but the persistent irritation put me over the edge. I have pretty sensitive eyes anyway, and previous trouble with infections, so this isn’t too surprising. Have to go back Wednesday for a recheck.

Ugh, that sucks. I know 2 people at work who had a similar issue as yours and got special eye drops to beat their infections. Hopefully the eye drops you got will do the trick for you and you can get back on your bike as soon as possible.

Ha! Turns out the my doc was in Reston yesterday, and in order to go see her I had to ride from work in Vienna, then ride back home in Falls Church by way of Rite Aid and both my kids’ schools (since they both rode to school). It ended up being a 34 mile day. So I’m not exactly off the bike; just suffering through it (and getting better already).
Thanks for your kind words.

ParticipantThe long dark school of year of limited bike commuting due to the wife’s work schedule ended as of this morning.
Back on the bike, back on the old route and couldn’t have asked for better weather for it.
Man I missed this.

I saw the eye doc last week and she prescribed an OTC med called Zaditor for my allergy eyes. Seems to be working. Put in 10 minutes before contacts 2x a day.

The three-med regimen my doc put me on last week has worked well: I rode 42 miles today, and haven’t suffered at all. Recheck is tomorrow; we’ll see how soon I can taper off to a minimum.

ParticipantIt’s been an interesting week so far:
Witnessed a car accident Tuesday morning right in front of me (stayed to help, give statement to police).
Thunderstorm ride home Tuesday night.
Then this morning about 5 miles in I notice something wrong. I think my cleat bolts are loose so I stop, but it turns out the left crank arm has gone all wobbly. I got another 3 or 5 miles before it decides it no longer wishes to be pressed upon and bails.

At this point I’m 10 miles in and 8 miles from work. I was weighing my various options and started walking up the CCT to Bethesda when I spied some guys working on a public pool. I borrowed a large screwdriver which when jammed into the crank does work well enough to tighten that bolt. I nursed it to the office with as little torque on the crank as possible. Now I’m off to the bike shop to sort this out.
Adventures in cycling!

))?

ParticipantAll kinds of stupid out there this morning:
1. Traveling westbound on the Pennsylvania Avenue cycle track, observed a cyclist ahead of me stopping for a red light, and then going through it when the cross-traffic light turned red, much to the annoyance of all of the cars in the opposite direction who had to wait for him while they had a green left-turn arrow.
2. Another cyclist and I were stopped at the end of the Pennsylvania Ave track, waiting for the signal to turn north on 15th St. The right-turn arrow and cycle signal turned green, while the main signal stayed red. The other cyclist and I started to go when we noticed the GIANT BUS IN THE LANE NEXT TO US WAS STARTING TO TURN LEFT. We shouted, and the driver graciously waived us through the intersection before continuing to turn left on red.
3. A car was making a right turn from southbound 15th street onto westbound K street (across the cycle track). When the light turned green, she turned into the cycle track, completely blocking it, while waiting for the heavy pedestrian traffic to clear.
I am learning to take these things in stride, although I did continue yelling at the bus for about half a block up 15th Street.

You hit the trifecta!
Actually, that isn’t that hard. Next time, go for the PA Ave u-turn, too, to get the superfecta and really win big!

Probably one of the hardest things about bike commuting! I can mostly do it now though.

Lemme guess, at Penn and 12th? Every day I see some mouthbreather jump that light despite it usually being (typically homicidal) metrobusses making that left off Penn. It’s a really short protected light cycle too, so their unwillingness to put up with that crap is doubly understandable. For whatever reason, cyclists seem not to be so brazen about it at Penn and 7th.
And while we’re on the subject of stupid, OMG THE SHOALING! Now that it’s warm enough I will be deploying my new state of the art anti-shoal device.
