… was in a bus. Again. With a psychotic driver who takes turns like it’s a little compact car. Because I’ve only just barely gotten better from a knocked-off-the-bike respiratory ailment, and it’s too cold. I say this as I look at the Freezing Saddles Bicycle Icicle still waiting to be mounted on a bike. Ugh.
Not being able to bike makes me grumpy, and sleepy and some other dwarves.
The respiratory ailment will last longer than you think. I had the flu last week from Saturday to Saturday and figured by now my lungs would be fine. Instead, 2/3 of the way in, I found myself still coughing hard. Oh well, I did make it. THe cold doesn’t bug me, just the hacking cough.

Uh huh. It is doing exactly that. The cold makes the hacking hackier.

ParticipantMy morning commute nearly had excess, ah, excitement.
On the MVT, just south of Memorial Bridge, at the point where to get to the Memorial Bridge you have to cross the George Washington Memorial Parkway. Where they had the warning lights for a while. I came up to the crossing, came to a full stop (I treat this crossing with a lot of respect), and almost immediately the vehicle in the right lane stopped for me. I paused for a moment to make sure the left lane stopped also, and then!
And then there was a honking, and a dust cloud (or was it smoke?), and a tractor / semitrailer swerving violently into the left lane to avoid climbing into the trunk of the car in front. Everybody stopped, no paint scraped, I crossed, and everyone continued on our morning journeys. This must be why some people avoid crossing there at all costs.
Are big trucks even allowed on the GWMP?

ParticipantThe NPS website says that “in most cases” trucks are not allowed on the GWMP – but there is a permit process.

That was Helpy Helperton trying to get ya. Looks like his devious plans almost backfired on him. That particular crossing is one of his favorites.

ParticipantThere aren’t many times cars are better than bikes. This might be one of them.

Yes, this is the main reason for me. A pedestrian was actually killed while waiting to cross at the crossing, by a vehicle that was swerving to avoid cars that had stopped. She wasn’t even in the crosswalk! http://www.arlnow.com/2011/04/20/jogger-hit-by-truck-on-gw-parkway-dies/

ParticipantThis morning I passed the bus that follows my exact riding route as it was pulling out of EFC and I beat it to my office over the course of the 6 mile route…that was a fun Cat6 race.

ParticipantIt’s amazing the difference made by taking a little wobble out of the back wheel. The ride this morning was so much quieter and smoother and shifting was so clean, both front and back. Add that to a beautiful, crisp morning and it makes for a good, fun ride.

ParticipantWhere did all these cyclists come from?

ParticipantI love my commute so much I did it twice this morning. I got to the office, went to grab my badge to show the guard, and realized I had left it on the dining room table. Since I can’t log into my computer without my badge, it’s kind of pointless to be at work. So back home, and back to work. I had to stop to adjust my seat and then again when I got home – it had felt low, so I raised it, and clearly raised it too much.
But my new brake pads, which I installed myself, were lovely.

ParticipantIt was a gorgeous day for a ride! A bit chilly perhaps, and since I’d misplaced my full-finger gloves, it was a kinda nippy on the tips of my fingers, but otherwise all good.
