ParticipantSince I once rode 100 miles in five inches of rain (have I bragged about that lately?), a few drops don’t bother me. Lightning is really dangerous though, so I usually wait it out under some shelter. You can get hit by lightning far from the actual storm.

Taking drivetrain simplicity to a whole new level.

ParticipantThere was only one part of me that wasn’t waterproof this morning: my ankles, in the tiny gap between my rain pants and my waterproof shoes. Then I did this on the ride home:

Plastic grocery bags! I can’t believe this worked!

ParticipantWell, after 65 million years in line at the post office he went with plan b.

Ha! The only part of me that was waterproofed this morning was my torso covered by a jacket. When I got to work and went to the gym to shower, I just walked in and started the shower with my shorts and shirt on to wash all the road funk off. I probably should have tried to squeeze my bike in there, too.

ParticipantI fell asleep on the bus ride home. So warm and dry….

My reply was only partially tongue-in-cheek. We really don’t get all that much lightning and thunder in the immediate DC area (hey, I’m a midwestern boy and those thunderstorms make the DC area ones look like a tempest in a teapot) so it only comes up for me a couple of commuting days a year. I’ve always wondered about riding along under the powerlines on the W&OD during a storm.
Mostly true, but I did manage to capture these images in September 2012 in Arlington. I didn’t use any special equipment. The lightning bolts were so intense and long-lasting that I knew I could time the next photo and take the picture with just my standard digital camera.

I always seem to get flats (three times) in the summer, on Memorial Bridge, during thunderstorms. I need to start packing Depends to go along with my spare tubes.

Participant… was in a bus. Again. With a psychotic driver who takes turns like it’s a little compact car. Because I’ve only just barely gotten better from a knocked-off-the-bike respiratory ailment, and it’s too cold. I say this as I look at the Freezing Saddles Bicycle Icicle still waiting to be mounted on a bike. Ugh.
Not being able to bike makes me grumpy, and sleepy and some other dwarves.

Participant… was crisp but beautiful. Bonus that I got to ride down a mostly closed Penn Ave and past a bunch of people getting ready for the parade. I unfortunately still know how to dress for the weather, so I was happily warm (after I finished pulling bedsheets off the berries and asparagus, which I stupidly did without gloves).
Does anyone actually have the day off?

Is this a code?

More like a euphemism.

We grow food. Since we already had leaves on the raspberries, buds on the blueberries and sprouts of asparagus, we had to cover them to protect against last night’s frost (that may not have happened). We don’t have fancy row covers, so we use old bedsheets and sand toy buckets. I had to remove them this morning so the plants will get sun.
