Awesome job! I’m just curious, are you going to DOT? Is it not easy to just take NJ from Eye st all the way down? Just trying to undestand the exact route and see if there’s an easy way if you don’t like 3rd.

You are right, NJ is probably easier and certainly shorter (and yeah, I am at USDOT.) I just get tempted by the grid of nice quiet streets east of NJ.

What kind of pump are you using? IMHO every rider should have a floor pump with a gauge at home rather than trying to pump up with the type of pump you carry with you on the bike. They aren’t too expensive, a reasonable one can be had for under $40. I have the Nashbar Orange floor pump at home

Its by Bell, and I don’t know the model (I got it from my daughter’s apartment it apparently belonged to a previous resident who had left it behind when moving out – typical student apartment that has had different roommates moving in and out for years, yet has never been vacated, and has accumulated “stuff”) It does not have a gauge – I suppose I can use the tire gauge from my car.

Don’t know for sure, but from what I understand, that’s par for the course on DC cycletracks. I don’t venture that way too often in my travels…

I have similar issues with a federal employee shuttle bus in Crystal City that is parked in the bike lane along Potomac Avenue by the corner of Crystal Dr. on a regular basis. It’s really annoying there, but at least it’s not in theory physically separated bike infra and traffic isn’t usually bad, so I can just swing around. Still hate that a-hole driver though… or whoever lets him/tells him to park there. 😡

A lot of those shuttles have those “How am I driving” stickers on the back. I’ve had good responses in the past registering complaints about commercial drivers in bike lanes, parked in handicapped spots, etc. (of course, the dispatchers could just as easily been humoring me, but…).

In this case, I don’t remember seeing a how’s my driving number ever, but I’ll look more closely next time in case I’m just blind with rage at this point. One time, I stopped, took pictures, and was able to find contact information for the company ($hitheads LLC or whatever it was) that was listed as the contractor. I sent a letter with photos to them as well as to someone in facility operations for the DC region for the EPA, one of the tenants in the building and the agency whose logo was plastered on one side of that particular shuttle, though I think USAID is also in that building? Regardless, I didn’t hear bupkis back from either. Surprise.

I’ve thought of trying to raise the issue somehow with Arlington parking enforcement or other appropriate body. Thoughts? There doesn’t seem to be an appropriate category on the famous Arlington app thingy? :(

I’ve matter-of-factly told a driver once or twice when his window has been down that he’s parked illegally in the bike lane. One responded once that that is where he’s instructed to wait to pick up passengers. Others act like they don’ even hear me. I continue to verbalize my frustration when I pass if I think the driver will hear me. This verbalization occasionally includes a little bit of colorful language depending on my mood. On numerous occasions I’ve made certain gestures to the driver with certain fingers that I’m not so proud of, but it’s just F-ing annoying.

Have you called Arlington Police? Non-emergency number is 703-558-2222

I hadn’t. It seemed a bit too extreme, but I just googled parking enforcement and they have the same number, so it might be worth a shot, and I won’t feel so guilty about placing a call…

Actually now that you prodded me to get off my lazy arse enough to do a Google search… …there’s an email contact for parking enforcement, too. Maybe I’ll try an e-mail w/ some photos as documentation next time I encounter this and see how things go from there.

I don’t think blocking a travel lane is parking enforcement. I’ve called the ACPD non-emergency number before, and they have been very helpful — listening to the problem then directing me to the right person. Especially given that this issue is recurring, the solution may be a letter or visit from ACPD to the company/agency responsible for the shuttle, which might be more effective than an isolated ticket.

OK, you’ve convinced me a call to ACPD non-emergency number is an advisable course of action next time I come across this shuttle bus…

I second the recommendation for a basic floor pump at home. And regarding pumps to take on the go, I’ll just note that I’ve ripped off my share of tube valves using frame pumps that don’t have a flexible hose, but just attach directly to the valve. I may be somewhat ham-handed, but a ripped valve isn’t patchable and isn’t something I want to deal with when I’m out with the bike. I suggest a portable/frame pump that includes a hose… :)

I went for a walk on L St today and was amazed at how many vehicles are parked in the cycletrack. Luckily (for me) my commute doesn’t take me this far into the district, but I feel bad for those who do (if anyone even takes L St). What’s the point of even having a cycletrack if there are cars parked in it on every block?

I ride L street every day and unfortunately this is true. The bike lane is just wide enough so that vehicles can park on it, not block vehicle traffic, and make it impossible for bikes to pass unless they swerve into the traffic lane. The bollards on the ends of the block have not been replaced since last spring. There was also a bollard in the middle of the lane in front if the Quincy hotel that hasn’t been replaced. I really think this cycle track makes it more dangerous for cyclists. More enforcement and replacing the bollards would help a lot.

Decided I would avoid the crazy trails today and go on a trail-free diet to work… It was certainly an experience.

Spotted a large…. errr…. dildo in the center of the intersection of Washington Blvd and N. Sycamore St. I would have taken a photo but I was being chased by a 2 ton truck. On that note, I was shocked at how many Sunday drivers REALLY wanted me to be with god today… literally!

The fact that you knew it was a dildo proves how much of a sinner you are. :p

So…yes, I can attest that Dickie saw a dickie.

I was driving the AdventureVagen filled with four Team Sticky Fingers ladies. Four bikes on top. Headed out to Luray to pre-ride the Tour of Page County course.

We were chitter-chattering along and all of a sudden one lady yelled out from the back seat, “THERE IS A BLACK DILDO ON THE STREET!” and, yes…there was, I saw it in my own side-view mirror as I drove along.

It was affectionately referred to as “blenis” the rest of the day. We looked for it on the return trip, but alas, it had gone on to other pastures.

(By the way, if anyone finds two large car magnets with the Team Sticky Fingers logo on it, can you return it to me? They blew off the car somewhere before the “blenis” and Luray.)

That situation on the TR bridge this morning was CRAZY. My jaw dropped through the floor when I saw what was causing the Eastbound backup. Basically there’s a big sinkhole, no it’s really a sinktrench, on the outer EB lanes. (Didn’t they just rebuild this bridge about 5 years ago?) One way or another DDOT will find a way for this to disrupt traffic on the main TR trail (on the cars’ westbound side).

Is it just me, or does the majority of the R-B corridor in Arlington appear to be sinking? Not that this is technically in Arlington, but it’s close…
