Yesterday evening there were some shenanigans by inexperienced folks on Cabis, but this morning almost everyone was riding safely and courteously! No shoaling, stopping at lights behind the crosswalks, calling passes. It was great!
This must be an April Fools joke.

The fair-weather riders are back out in FORCE. I was actually late in today due to traffic in the bike lanes (and missing several lights I usually make)!

Yah, last night was annoying. I had some people making highly inadvisable passes. I called out to one or two that if they want to play chicken then just say so. On top of that were the more fair-weather runners who were executing the usual crazy ivans, listening to music so loud they can’t hear a bell, or otherwise doing crazy stuff.
And I don’t even get to bike today or tomorrow because of a work trip to NYC tonight. Boo.

The worst offenders on my way home last night were not the people on CaBis. They were all well behaved. The problem instead was:
1. The tourons downtown (just cuz there are twelve of you doesn’t mean you need to walk 12 abreast and block everyone trying to walk or cycle in either direction)
2. People on their own bikes unwilling to slow down and wait a few seconds to pass when it was safe to do so, instead going three wide and not calling it either on the MVT.Dare I say that I miss the dark days of winter when we didn’t have such problems???

ParticipantI caught up to a rider riding north on Westmoreland this morning, who actually turned out to be riding to the same office as me. I think I can count on one hand the times that has happened. But it reminded me of the sitting/standing discussion, since I caught up to him on the hill out of Pimmit Run and patiently rode behind him in the bike lane…he kept standing and pedaling on his geared bike, while I sat and pedaled at a leisurely pace on my FG. I was tempted to pass him on the hill, since he was going quite a bit slower than is my rhythm, but that seemed a bit rude (don’t ask me why), so I waited and passed him once things leveled out. I yelled “good morning!” but he had his headphones in and ignored me. I stopped at the next light and he totally shoaled me and blew the light, then tried to take a shortcut (which isn’t shorter), but I still ended up way ahead of him at the end to claim the Cat6 victory.

ParticipantI try very hard to be nice to the tourists. They often don’t know better and I want cyclists to look good to them so they can go back to their hometowns and help the cyclists there.
I feel less charitable toward the locals who engage in unsafe passes or other bad behavior. And I really miss winter on the MVT.

ParticipantI was super late this morning. In addition to that being bad for my, you know, job, it meant a LOT more tourists along the Mall and tour buses on Jefferson. I believe I have learned my lesson and will endeavor to get to work on time.
PS. What’s the deal with the bleachers along Constitution. One set has been there for at least 3 weeks, and it seems to have spawned. Any idea when they’ll be gone? I may have to
take the 14th St Bridge… April 1, 2014 at 3:30 pm #997305cyclingfool
ParticipantThe bleachers that lingered were set up for the St Patty’s Day parade, methinks. I think they just left those up and are now putting up additional ones for the Cherry Blossom Festival parade. I’m too lazy to look up when that actually is, but probably this weekend or next.

Why not just pull into the parking place, which is plenty big and RIGHT THERE!

Same location, same time, the next morning. He pulled up into a spot that was JUST 20 FEET AWAY when he saw I was taking a picture.

Given that you have his license plate number, have you reported him? You can easily through seeclickfix

ParticipantNice big beautiful parking space on the other side of the street he could have just pulled into. Interesting, a different car today. Got to love the livery drivers of such important people.

ParticipantRode from Rosslyn to Crystal City today on a CaBi after work. Boy do I not miss the MVT. To the dude stopping on the hill near the aeroport – posing for a self while you’re blocking traffic is a really dumb idea. No need to get pissy when people call you out.
