ParticipantI signed up for it and can’t wait. First week in April I’ll be burning up Crystal City and the MVT on a Bikeshare. Best look out.

I’m going to be back next week for work meetings. I was going to bring my bike but I think I’m just going to Bikeshare while I’m there.

I rode up to the Seward Coop last night and ran into that on the way back. Kept having to stop to deice my glasses. When I got home and took my jacket and jersey off I discovered I had an ice sheet on my stomach!

ParticipantCRAZY commute in today. First, a dog (looked like a very furry beagle/basset hound mix) ran across my path with its leash trailing behind. No owner in site. I chased it for about 3 miles on my bike (up a pretty big hill no less) as it was chasing a family of deer. Lost its trail somewhere around Wayne Avenue and Sligo Creek for any Takoma Park-ians who read this. Then, the gravel portion of my bike trail was covered in ice and snow. Slowed me to 8 mph for a few miles. To add insult to injury, I got a flat tire, went to the nearby bike shop to change it in a warm area and they were closed. Changed it in the cold and finally made it to work. All told, 1 hour 15 minute commute turned into 2 hours.

ParticipantGravelly Point was pretty intense this AM with the headwinds. I was pedaling pretty hard on flat ground to maintain 6-7 mph for a while. Ugh…
Oh, and there were whitecaps on the Potomac. I’ve seen that before, but I know it’s a particularly windy day when I do.

ParticipantThis morning was lovely — despite being only 20 degrees. A day with sunshine and no wind. I took a lap of Haines Point and had an audience.

ParticipantForecast said rain wouldn’t start until 9am or so. I walked out of the house at 730 and it was sprinkling. Way too warm for any form of rain gear though, so I just left in my regular clothes and hoped for the best. The rain never got heavy enough to get me really wet, and the roads still were dry enough that I wasn’t getting sprayed by my tires….so I’m calling it a win. Add in the rare tailwind out of the south and it was actually a pretty nice morning for a bike ride.

ParticipantWell, obviously you looked at the wrong forecast. I was still happy and comfortable with my rain jacket over baselayer, somehow even the colder temperatures we’ve had lately, I don’t consider 50°F to be “too warm” for rain gear.

ParticipantOn the way to Coffee Club, I had to yell at two drivers who failed to yield entering an occupied bike lane. Coffee Club was great, as usual. Leaving Coffee Club, I noticed that The 14th St War Zone had claimed another tube from me. I missed the FCC Rollout (the slowest, shortest, and most-photographed group ride in Washington DC) changing a flat. U-turner on PA Ave but I was too far away to get her attention.
But my bike did hit 3,000 miles just a block or so from work, so that’s nice.

ParticipantWas on a beach cruiser with 2 toddlers in the trailer. Biked to For Moultrie. Awesome, even if it’s cold-for-here and rainy, and even if I had no gears. Or brake levers.
Though I officially have no idea how one could bike around DC without gears or brake (lever)s.

ParticipantI was riding home at a leisurely pace when I got to wondering: What percent of max effort do folks normally commute at?
Obviously, inside the district or other dense urban areas this really isn’t relevant but when you are on a fairly open trail or road, how hard do you push up those hills?
I think I’d say I go between 60 and 70% on average. I rarely feel in the mood to really “kick it” hard. Are folks using their commutes to get in a really tough workout?

ParticipantI’m usually tired when I’m commuting, carrying a bag of stuff, and have to get home in a reasonable amount of time without a bailout. So I generally don’t push it real hard
