The one dollar bill I found on Park St by St James was wet!
It’s still a lucky find!
Quick solution for the moisture issue: get a piece of string (use a shoelace if you don’t have any random string anywhere) and a clothespin/paperclip (costs ~1 cent), hang the bill up (in a secure place, of course), wait a few hours, and after taking my 2 cents of advice, you should have a net gain of about $1.01

Here’s some interesting bicycle trivia. When I was at the 14,000 ft camp on McKinley/Denali In Alaska, I met a guy with a road bike (the truth!) He had achieved recognition for riding the length of the Great Wall of China, and his intention was to ride/bring his bike to every state high point. There are roads near the summit on only a handful of state high points (Florida is one) He told me he had to carry it partially disassembled on this climb. When I saw him later on the way to 17,000′ he had a bike wheel in his gloved hand. I don’t think he made it to the summit–with or without his bike. He also told me he’d run into trouble on Mt Rainier in Washington, because the rangers said bikes were not allowed. His name was Kevin Foster.
He should have tried it with a BikeFriday or some such.

Participant… was perfect! It was an absolutely beautiful morning, crisp, with just enough chill in the air to keep from getting sticky and an awesome views of the sun shining through white, fluffy clouds.

ParticipantHad a nice, though brief, chat with a man crossing the street at 17th and PA when I was leaving FCC. He was asking about wearing work clothes on a bike commute. I told him that while some do, I sweat too much, and am lucky to have a gym with a shower at the office. Hopefully it planted a little seed in his mind and he’ll consider biking to work one day.

ParticipantDid my last commute today for awhile, since I’ll be taking a hiatus from work. It felt weird to unhook my bike lock from the hitching post for the last time. I’ll now enter the brave new world of recreational cycling (and pre-school drop off). Will I be able to motivate myself when it’s not my travel mode back and forth to work? Time will tell. I think I’ll miss my commute. But maybe it will be nice to be a fair weather cyclist for awhile.

I’m sorry, fair weather has been canceled for this year. We’re going straight from Polar Vortex to soul-destroying heat and humidity. You can always be a sweaty and miserable cyclist, though.

I’ve wondered about this myself. When I’m on my commute, I love that I’m going somewhere I have to be, and I’m getting all that great exercise and enjoyment out of it at the same time. I hope you are able to keep that motivation outside your commute! I’ve found I can have as much fun cycling to other things as cycling to work, though the feel of it is slightly different. The challenge of going somewhere new, or getting various tasks done by bike, is always rewarding.

You’ll be able to motivate yourself by thinking about it differently. I work from home but still “commute” everyday by combining both of my “to and back” rides into one early morning ride. Even though I end up where I start, I get all the benefits of getting out and riding. I can’t think of any better way to start a day. The one bonus is that you don’t have to think about the ride home (leaving, weather etc.). I wake up every morning excited to get on my bike and ride to work.

Good luck with the change in pace. I hope to see you at some Kidical Mass rides this spring/summer!
(And yes, we’ll start planning those soon. In fact, there would have been one this weekend, but I’m not in Arl).

This is my worry. Will I ride as much if conditions are not perfect? For my commute, the alternative was the bus and metro, so it was a rare day that the bike was not the better choice. I’d rather be sweaty on my bike than jammed in with 50 other sweaty people on the metro. However, if the choice is between being sweaty on my bike and just chilling out with some iced coffee, hmmm, it’s a little harder to motivate. I’m going to try to incorporate biking into my day in some other way, so it just becomes part of the day, as has been suggested. Otherwise, I really will be miserable… and probably 20 pounds heavier!

ParticipantAverage temperatures for Arlington, County. Contrary to myth, we do not go from freezing winter to sweltering summer. One of the things I love about this area is that we get four wonderful seasons.

ParticipantThe problem is not so much the average as the standard deviation. We often spend what is supposed to be spring veering wildly back and forth between freezing winter and sweltering summer. If one day is 30 and the next is 90, the average is 60, but that doesn’t mean that either day feels like spring.

Yeah, I call BS. The high point of your chart is labelled “warm.” That doesn’t even begin to describe our summers.

ParticipantTaking the pledge to ride 30 days in April might help motivate you. http://30daysofbiking.com
