ParticipantCold and lonely this morning…traffic in north Arlington was practically non-existent, which made my ride relaxing and pretty quick. And since we’re gonna hit 60 today, I’m going to have to leave early and go for a ride!

I was with you until you mentioned the “pretty quick…” part – I had gravy coming out of my pores and was slogging along. I am with you on the leaving early and extending the commute home into a nice ride.

Participantquite the quiet ride this morning. Sad that there was no swings fridaycoffeeclub, but nice to avoid much less traffic on the route through DC.

ParticipantI haven’t rode much in the last two weeks, in part because of moving offices. I got to do my new commute this morning for the first time, and it was a blast. I now have another river/bridge crossing (South Capitol Street Bridge), and I can’t wait until the afternoon to be riding back into DC to see the view. And for the first time I have a shower in my building! Things are looking up….

ParticipantIt seems a little early in the season, but Moose Mitts might be nice this morning.

ParticipantIt was especially frosty this morning…lots of drivers scraping their windshields
I’m pretty happy with my layering situation, as I arrived at work very comfortable, with just a slight dampness on my base layer. I could probably do it without sweating at all, but that would be slow and no fun.

Frost on the wood bridges and boardwalks was a bit squidgy this morning for sure. Added a bit of spice to the ride.

ParticipantI wore a merino wool polo shirt, arm warmers, and a windproof thermal vest. No sweat! Baaaaaaaaaa.
Could’ve used some Moose Mitts and warmer feet but it wasn’t a big deal. I chose my 26″ beater/MTB to ride given the potential for frostiness.

Man, I wish I was that impervious to cold…even being from Idaho and having a few pounds of uh, internal insulation, I am a total cold weather wuss. This morning it was faux-Under Armor>merino shirt>l/s jersey>windbreaker. I probably could’ve done without the faux-Under Armor, but I would’ve been miserably cold in much less than that.

ParticipantToday! Was awesome! AWESOME!
I hadn’t ridden in a WHOLE MONTH. What was I thinking?! HOW MUCH FUN was my ride today?!
Very much, that’s how much.
I believe my bike muchness is back.
I had armwarmers & Smartwool knee warmers and I broke Rule #82 because I got hot and took off my armwarmers but not my knee warmers, so I guess I am not ELITE today.
My toes got cold. I will have to get some wool socks.
The Penn Ave cycletrack is all shiny & new & repaved now but all the bollardses are gone. I did not get U-turned into by any cabs though so that was good.
Tonight I will have to ride home in the dark, but it will be better than Metro!
WOOHOO.

Being from warmer climes than DC, I’m far from impervious to cold – actually I get cold easily. But I do sweat easily when I bike and I don’t have shower facilities at work. Merino wool stuff is great. If it works for sheep, it works for me.

ParticipantToday was the first day on the bike since Nov. 15 (aka the last day we had 1 kid). It was AWESOME! I took the toddler to preschool on the electric bike, and we both had a blast!
I almost miss commuting…

ParticipantHoly carp I need proper lights. And clean lenses in my cycling glasses. The ride home was rather exciting in parts. :p

ParticipantThere were some really weird thermal pockets tonight. Was warm in north Arlington, at least 5 degrees colder starting at Roosevelt Island, warmed up significantly at Gravelly Point, got cold again in Shirlington, then warm again on the W&OD, then super cold by Glencarlyn Park, then warm again by the time I hit Westover. And it wasn’t like I was getting warmer/colder gradually, it was almost immediate changes when I’d hit warm/cold air pockets.
