ParticipantFirst commute since the 16th of January today. It has literally been that long since I’ve felt safe to travel down the WOD. SAD!! Back-up bike today because the VO bike is in the shop. Hybrid cruisers down plane as well but I have fenders so that’s all that counts. Also, must have been construction day on the trail today. Past 4 work stations going on full of trucks and field equipment. Happy riding everyone.

ParticipantI can’t remember the last time I’ve commuted on my bike. Between cold, ice, and travel, it’s probably been three weeks. I tried to go from Arlington to Reston on Friday, but turned back due to ice. Today all was clear and good. I’m planning on leaving a bit early to beat this evening’s ice storm, though.

In Chicago the parks department makes puddles for skating.

ParticipantGot a flat on Water street (SW Waterfront). Despite the wet and cold, got a fairly quick change, pumped it up, flat again. Booo. I think with all the sand, salt, etc. on my rims and tires, it was inevitable that something else got in the tire when changing it. It’s tough before the sun comes up and with that much junk to be clean about it.
Anyways, I walked a little over a mile from there to South Capital Street Bridge, which bummed me out, but then a friendly guy named Lance rolled down his window and offered to throw my bike on his bike rack and give me a lift. He wasn’t even going to base, where I was going, but still gave me a ride about a mile and a half to my building. It makes you happy that there are such nice pople around.

ParticipantJust got my Moose Mitts on Saturday, and after installing them incorrectly yesterday, I think I got it right today. It wasn’t really cold enough to need them, but it makes a huge difference not to have wet gloves. And they amuse the garage guards (“It looks like you’re riding with boxing gloves on”).

ParticipantFairfax has been using a salt/sand mix on the road and it is freaking killing my drivetrain (and my eyes and lungs). The dry weather yesterday helped keep it out of everything (except my eyes), but now it’s muddy grit again and it sticks to everything! I could feel it grinding down my crank and cassette with every stroke of the pedals this morning.

I’ve got to get around to sending a strongly worded letter of protest to someone. In our neighborhood, every time there’s any sort of winter weather predicted, a truck comes along and drops a line of salt about 18 inches wide and 3 inches high just right of center in each lane. It’s like the little dynamite line from the old cartoons. The rain yesterday finally got rid of it, but it was back this morning because of the ice.

The salt is bad, but the sand is worse, I think. From what I can tell, ArlCo has pretty much stopped using sand, but Fairfax is laying it down like it’s going out of style (and it actually is going out of style…).

ParticipantHas anyone else noticed the yellow-orange colored stuff on the Custis behind the Italian Store? It seems like sand to me…

I thought it was reflective striping that had been sprayed over sand, it colored my tires a bit yesterday morning.

ParticipantThe worst part of this mornings commute (other than having to sit by myself at HDCC) was just getting down my driveway.
