ParticipantI think I’ve hit my recommended yearly salt intake from riding in the street. On the plus side, it sure helps ward off a sore throat!

Lovely. My commute, on city streets, is not scenic, but this morning while waiting for the light at 1st & K NE I was feeling good with the sun streaming on my face in the still, cold air.

ParticipantWeather.com’s definition of “light rain” is vastly different from mine…

Well, at least the NWS started say just rain instead of light rain by 6 am.

Participantof course I couldn’t find my rain pants this morning.

ParticipantIt was definitely a rain cape kind of morning. Only saw three other cyclists on my way in this AM between 7:30 and 8 AM, and two of those were withing a two blocks of my downtown DC office.

Which is one of the reasons I stick to the NWS for weather instead of the Weather Channel. That, and I don’t have to deal with annoying ads on the page since the NWS is working for me, John Q. Taxpayer, and not in it for ad revenue/profit. Oh, that and I have done my best to avoid the Weather Channel, even its website, like the Dickens since it essentially became a reality TV channel with occasional weather reports mixed in.

Yeah, I was out with my rain cape and only encountered three other riders as well. One good thing about this kind of rain is that it washes off the accumulated salt. That may also be a bad thing as the temperature drops throughout the day and the rain changes to sleet and snow. Heavy sigh.

ParticipantAt ~9:00AM it was raining heavily enough to sting and obscure vision. Also, the cycletrack puddle at 15th and Alexander Hamilton Pl. was inches deep with the filthiest looking brine I’ve seen on the roads in some time.

Me neither… oh wait, I don’t own any! (… yet)
I knew what I was in for but it’s still always an interesting feeling walking into work realising you are soaked through in several layers, in several parts of your body. I don’t mind riding in wet gear – it’s getting it dry again for the ride home that’s more important.
I also don’t think there will be any accumulation of note around DC. Hoping my bike enjoyed some of the morning cleansing. I did.

ParticipantAmen on the salt and other road crap that’s built up. And I honestly don’t think that it’s going to be that bad in town or south of town. #famouslastwords
Actually, though, NWS now says no accumulation for National Airport, and the precip is supposed to taper off after noon, so that is encouraging.

I decided to wear some supposedly waterproof Endura Stealth bibtights I bought last fall. This was the first time I’ve actually worn them in the rain, and at 40°F they were slightly too warm, but they were definitely waterproof.

ParticipantI was soaked, but the 3 year old stayed dry in her rain coat over the winter coat and her lower half in a garbage bag!

ParticipantI had a lovely commute. My new Showers Pass commuter pants were AWESOME (Christmas present – thanks go out to my amazing mother-in-law) and my rain coat with its hood under my helmet worked really well. I could have gone with the heavier tights and a lighter top, but oh, well. Overall, a wonderful commute. The only gear I have to dry are my gloves, and the hand dryers in the bathroom work well for those.

Oh, no, now Tim’s throwing his kid away… But seriously, pics or it didn’t happen.
