Got a look at the up-river sidepath on Key this evening. Saw mostly lumpy ruts.
Indeed, it did suck, but not as bad as the Fairfax connector, which I had to walk with 700×32 lightly studded tires.

ParticipantYesterday evening and this morning I like to think I let my common sense (of which I have very little take over). I actually caught the 3A bus to Lyon Village to stop at Big Wheel Bikes for derailleur adjustments (why did they eliminate the 3B bus which I could have taken all the way to Bikenetics). This morning I hit back streets from Westover to Rosslyn. My only issue was riding up Lee Highway from Lyon Village to Lincoln, after the third lane ended absolutely none of the cars passing me were giving me the required two feet even with me riding in the center of the right hand lane. 😡

That stretch of Lee might be my absolute least favorite road segment anywhere. Some times when I am feeling masochistic, I will take Lee from Key Bridge all the way up to Glebe. It always sucks.

I’m trying to figure which is the more masochistic behavior: biking on Lee Highway or doing business with Big Wheel Bikes.

ParticipantI had a perfectly lovely, if somewhat longer than normal commute: 3Y bus into DC (*cough* rcannon this goes by your place too *cough*), then CaBi from the first stop in DC (19th & E) to almost work. Took the lane on Constitution & 15th without a problem. I only wish they’d put CaBi stations in close to the Capitol.

Well, Big Wheel was the only LBS on my way home and they did the work while I waited (no one else in the shop). Got to figure out, is there a bus up Wilson? Time to stop by the Commuter Store in Rosslyn while I’m “out to lunch.”

38B should fit the bill. Ballston to Farragut via Wilson/Clarendon.

I think you would have been better off taking Kirkwood to 14th or all the way to Fairfax.

Participant… hasn’t happened for 2 days. I skipped the cost of studded tires in favor of some nicer winter apparel thus I’m working from home and bummed. Completing my 2014 mileage goal is already looking tough… ughh!

Taking Kirkwood or even Highland to get to Key is almost always better than Lee.

I was thinking of that, but I dislike riding on Kirkwood more than I do Lee Highway for what is only a bad two blocks.

Thanks, that would get me to Revolution Cycles as an alternative. The Commuter Store did not have the updated route maps available.

And the lumber must be wreaking havoc with your decor.

It’ll also get you very close to Freshbikes.

This is exactly my alternative route for snowy days (such as this whole week), and it’s always pretty terrible. I can’t wait until Custis is useable again…
