I left early to go to HDCC but had an equipment failure while crossing Four Mile Run just west of Columbia Pike. The handlebar on my hybrid broke in two at the stem so I had to walk the two and a half miles home and switch to my road bike and take the short way to work. Eminva was nice enough to stop and ask if I needed any help as I walked through Glencarlyn Park, but not much you can do when half of your handle bar is hanging by the brake and shifter cables.

I rode from Crystal City up FMR, the W&OD and Custis this morning starting at about 0600. It was a ninja fest today. I passed and counted 23 runners and 15 of them were in stealth mode. For the record, I do not consider that dime-sized piece of reflective material on the back of a running shoe to be adequate.

With the fog, mist on my glasses and general dark it was pretty sucky.

A wooly morning, but fresh and quiet with the damp and fog. Didn’t have to stop once until I got to Independence and 3rd SW.

I’ll need to have the Bikenetics CSI team examine the bars for signs of saw or acid marks. ;)

To the dude on the blue trek road bike, hope you made it to Arlington! Hopefully my flat tire changing lesson will prove useful to you in the future. And always remember, keep those tires properly inflated! Pinch flats are a beast! Also, lookup some youtube videos on how to change a flat so you can study and get some practice if it happens and nobody is around. All the best!

Terrible image quality but…did I see a fox on Custis today?

Pretty dusting of snow in Vienna this morning. My kind of snow – no slick trail but pretty to look at.

I don’t have a photo, but I definitely saw a fox hanging out next to the MVT just south of the 14th St. bridge around 7:30 p.m. last night.

I’ve seen one on the large field at Gravelly Point south of the CSX bridge a couple times in the last two months or so after sunset. Perhaps the same one Arlingtonrider saw last night. It’s neat to see. I hope he never tries to cross GWP… :-

I saw a beaver this morning out collecting wood and swimming in Difficult Run. By the time I got my phone out of my bag, it had disappeared. Crazy.

I saw a cockroach the size of a beaver near the bike cages in the basement yesterday, does that count?

Since we are on the topic…sort of…I have a question as someone new to the area (~18months, moved from Phoenix). It seemed to me that there is a road kill season in the area that “feels” like roughly October and November. Am I making this up or is there actually more road kill during certain parts of the year?

Also: Taking pictures of dead animals from a bike would be an interesting, albeit super creepy, project.

Also: I once ran over a large black snake the size of a garden hose on the CCT and deer frighten me…a lot.

    Sorry for the diversion into…this.

On my regular commute I used to see a fox daily, but from what I can gather she has an injured hamstring so I haven’t seen her in a while :-)

    That’s no fox. She’s a vixen.
