It lulled me into complacency so I almost didn’t react fast enough when the MPD police car with lettering proclaiming “2nd District Officer of the Year” abruptly pulled into my path from the curb on M Street.

Both things, sadly, are easily true.

ParticipantCommute has been quiet the past 2 days… almost too quiet. I didn’t even have to use my bell this morning because there were no joggers or cyclists to pass on the MVT.
It’s weird but I have found so far that on these calm, cold mornings it is MUCH colder on the east side of the Anacostia than it is in DC or Arlington. By the time I got to the Douglass Bridge the past 2 mornings I was on the verge of overheating, but as soon as I get over the bridge to Anacostia River Rd, it’s cold. Surprisingly cold. Cold enough that the climbs up to Suitland weren’t enough to warm me up. Brrrrrr.

ParticipantNow that was a post i didn’t need to read right before the start of freezing saddles. Brrrrrr, cold just thinking about it.

ParticipantI think it might be time to break out the moose mitts.

ParticipantI hope it gets cold enough this year that I can use my lobster mitts & balaclava!
My toes were a little cold this morning, I will admit. 😎

The good news is that the east side of the Anacostia is easy to avoid. You need to have a reason to cross those crap-hole bridges.

ParticipantI ride along the Mount Vernon trail towards mount vernon, I think it is cold both ways. Although this year i plan on using the Rex bus at huntington metro as the part way option on cold cold days. That way I only have to ride out of my neighborhood and over the woodrow wilson bridge. Then my commute is only about 14 miles total.

Yesterday on my commute home I was shocked to see a fox searching for food in broad daylight (about 4:00 pm) by the Jefferson Memorial.

Nice photo! My wife sees foxes along the Reflecting Pool during her morning walks, but she has never gotten a photo.

I think that fox lives in the woods between the ball fields and the FDR Memorial.

Which bridges? They all seem ok except the new MLK which is great.
And how are they easy to avoid if one needs to make it over that river?

I was surprised by this cold pattern as well. However, I was fully overheated shortly afterwards. I simply run hot like an old car.

I was talking about PA Ave, which is covered in glass and has dangerous 295 ramps on the east side, and the Douglass, which is falling apart and is too darn narrow.
I don’t think there are many of us that have to ride over to SE and NE DC, so that’s what I meant. You need a reason to ride over there. I think I was also subconsciously voicing my displeasure with my commute. Heh.

And I was surprised to see one in the dying light of dusk a few weeks ago near Gravelly Point… but by the TJ Memorial. Wow…

ParticipantQuietest ride I’ve had so far. Only 10 other bikes, only one in Rosslyn. Can’t wait to see what tomorrow is like.

ParticipantSo, it turns out a week away from home, drinking too much and eating large quantities of my sister-in-law’s chocolate-covered-marshmallow-and-coconut-ball snowmen is NOT a good way to prepare for a more challenging than usual commute due to having to drop off the rental car on my way in. I may have overdone it this morning.
