You shouldn’t have to change the cassette at the same time as the chain unless you wait too long to replace the chain.
What Sheldon Brown says about changing the chain.
If the rivet is 1/16″ past the mark, you should replace the chain, but the sprockets are probably undamaged.
If the rivet is 1/8″ past the mark, you have left it too long, and the sprockets (at least the favorite ones) will be too badly worn. If you replace a chain at the 1/8″ point, without replacing the sprockets, it may run OK and not skip, but the worn sprockets will cause the new chain to wear much faster than it should, until it catches up with the wear state of the sprockets.
If the rivet is past the 1/8″ mark, a new chain will almost certainly skip on the worn sprockets, especially the smaller ones.November 11, 2012 at 4:30 am #955346thecyclingeconomist
ParticipantAnd if you over wear the chain and cassette…then just keep riding till they start skipping when you really put power into your pedal stroke…no point in spending the 75 to 125 bucks now…

Or until it breaks…

When I first read this, I read “Alton Brown”, and was wondering what the Good Eats guy knew about bikes. Then I learned to read.

Regardless I’m sure the answer is “everything”.

“As far as I’m concerned, there’s no better way to experience the road than from the back of a bike” – Alton Brown

… and that’s what started this conversation in the first place. Just going around in circles (like a well trued bike wheel
).

ParticipantMy morning commute was WET. Also left the helmet on the DR table. Sorry bout that. So my AM ride to work sucked.

ParticipantStill pregnant. This was my first commute since 2 weeks ago (damn you, child-born plagues!) and I’m hoping my last commute for a while. I really want this kid’s birth story to start “I biked to work on the day you were born”, so I’m hoping for some forum mojo to help me out.
BTW, it was cold this morning. And no one was out biking. And it is really nice to commute by the river, monuments, etc. Taking a few days off made me really appreciate it all (despite the cold).

Go to the Well Dressed Burrito for lunch. Get the spicy sauce. The first bite gives me hiccups. The second bite cures them.

Hit some sweet jumps…maybe that’ll shake him/her loose.

I considered doing loops of the Custis moguls (the ones just West of the top of Rosslyn hill), and/or going through Gtown and riding on the cobbles. Maybe if I’m still pregnant tomorrow.
I confess, it’s more comfortable biking than walking at this point. When I stand up, things slide down into uncomfortable places.

ParticipantIt’s amazing how often riding is more comfortable than walking. For me this year: Any kind of injury on the bottom of your foot, sore calves from running, sore ribs from cracking them on the ground – riding is more comfortable!

I lurrrve that place if I can be bothered walking that “far” for lunch. And their spicy sauce is actually spicy.

ParticipantHad an unanticipated driving day today due to having to wear a suit (vomit). I wear one so rarely that I don’t keep a spare at the office. Anyway, I’ve discovered that, in the AM, driving from my new house only saves me about 5 minutes over biking. And despite my drive being only 20 minutes, it still put me in a bad mood. My PM drive is maybe 15 minutes less than biking, but that’s not enough to make me say “gee, maybe I’ll just take the car today” like I used to when I lived on the Hill.
