In Ottawa visiting the corporate headquarters. Commute is 3 blocks, so I walked it:

This Bike is always attached to this post. In the 6 months I’ve been coming to Ottawa I haven’t actually seen it moved.

Just after I took this pic, some guy on a fixie with a drop handlebar rode down the street. I don’t think he heard me yelling “Rocking Rule #9!”

My commute takes me by Sweden too. I wonder if they have a VASA ride too. Totally sporting the only scarf I’ve ever earned.

And of course, Canadians must get their beer, even in the driving snow.

MVT – Airport to Custis was fine except for the two little overpasses at airport. Custis was OK. Climb out of Rosalyn was clear, but after 66 overpass it was pretty icy until first climb past corkscrew (corkscrew was fine).
riding 32 road tires about 60psi.

Walked outside and thought “wow, pretty warm, I totally overdressed.” It was 26 degrees. Winter is a sickness and it needs to stop!

Almost took a plunge this morning. Near Lake Artemesia, the entrance road sometimes retains water. I was on the lookout for it, and thought I spotted a dry (but snowy) path to the side. Turns out it was a dusting of snow on an 1/4″ of ice on 3″ of water. It was part icebreaking, part slipping on wet chunks of ice, and all nerve wracking.

I gave a practice talk for my thesis defense 10 minutes later. I’m glad I wasn’t soaked in ice water!

    Tad bit nipper this morning.
    Also, weird sound alert:
when i was coasting down hill at higher speed, somewhere on my bike a high pitch rubbing brake pad type sound would happen. Check the pads, nothing rubbing. As soon as I pedaled, it would stop, which made for some hairy descents. Maybe bottom bracket area. Sorry to vague about the location, i was wearing one of those windblock ear covers. I don’t ride my cross much, so kind of unfamiliar with the bike’s nuances.
    Any ideas??

Today was the only morning I can remember where, during normal commuting hours, I was the only person in the locker room during my entire change/shower routine. Makes me think that people are put off more by days with lower high temps than days with lower lows but moderate high temps.

I’d agree. Also I think people are still worried about trail conditions. I don’t know that DC has any temps that would keep me in, but today is the first I’ve rode because ice scares me quite a bit. I asked Santa for studded tires, this storm just came a few weeks too early!

I’m in the same boat! Only I asked for Bar Mitts rather than tires.

Took this picture Wednesday morning around sunrise standing under the MARC/VRE/Metro/Amtrak tracks that cross over L St NE between 1st and 2nd. It shows the now vacant former site of the Greyhound bus station. The intersection in the distance is 1st and K NE, near Union Station. The view across the vacant lot will soon be filled with a building.

It was Thunderdome tonight! I kept wondering if there had been some sort of natural disaster and everyone was fleeing the city.

It started early too. I left about 4:30 and traffic was already bad everywhere. The poor dears, stuck there in their little machines.

My neighbor works in Georgetown and it took her 2.5 hours to get home last night. Still not clear on what the problem was. I rubbed it in just a little.

Betcha none of that would have happened if only DC hadn’t put in all those bike lanes!

Among GWMP commuters, there’s a common refrain: “Under normal conditions, it’s generally an easy, quick road to commute on. But if one little thing goes wrong, it’s the worst road in the region to be on.”

Today looked to be the latter….so glad I don’t commute on it anymore.
