I have on several occasions been called a horses ass, so perhaps thats a bit more my speed.

Maybe I wouldn’t mind a carbon commuter (Foundry Auger!), but I do love my ti commuter! Ah, what a tough life
What do ya’ll do to your bikes? In 50 years of riding, I’ve never broken a bike frame. I came close when I t-boned a car that rolled through a stop sign back when I rode on sidewalks in my misspent youth. The front fork bent a little as did the top tube, but the bike worked fine. Luckily it was stolen a couple months later and I could get a slightly better bike.

TBH, none of the bikes I broke were really ones that I abused. I’ve done some crazy stuff on my older aluminum (and my current carbon) mountainbikes, and they’ve all taken it without an issue. The steel bikes that broke were singlespeed mountainbikes (which were for easier trails) or commuting bikes.
I’ve come to the conclusion that the nicer steel bikes (which tend to shoot for low weight and good ride quality) just ain’t that strong. Which matches the material properties; steels strength to weight ratio just isn’t that good compared to other materials.

In my case, I was just riding along. I was totally surprised it happened. And while I know that it happens, I’ve been surprised how many others have reported also having frames break. My frame shows nothing other than the slightest bit of superficial rust, and that is all on parts of the frame nowhere near the break. I do not hop curbs or anything of the sort. In my case, the pop that turned out to the breaking of the frame occurred ***gasp*** as I rode over the ~4″ drainage grate that crosses the Crystal City Connector Trail on the airport side of the bike/ped only tunnel, not exactly a jarring impact for a mountain bike frame riding on 2″ tires. Guess it was just a case of $#!T happening to an almost 20 year old frame, though I assume rough riding would increase the likelihood of failure.

ParticipantYeah, I don’t know. I have only broken two frames, both mountain biking. The first was a single speed just being ridden a lot (not sure what did it, just found it was cracked when I took off the crankset one day). The second just a cross bike being ridden in Lake Fairfax. (That seemed defective; they replaced it under warranty.)
That friend that I mentioned broke the carbon frame has broken at least 5 other mountain bike frames (aluminum, ti) … so I figure 2 is doing great!

My excellent tube patch work from the weekend gives out. Dang nabbit. And I only had a little time to go to coffee this morning as it was. Ah hell.
Yell, at least, since I was home, I got to put on a brand new tire as well.

What I could not figure out was who the message board was targeting. It said “High Ped Accident Area – Only cross with signal.” Since only pedestrians have a signal, were they encouraging pedestrians to be safer?

ParticipantYou’re not allowed to go into that lane anyway, the northbound left-most lane at Lynn & WB Lee is left-turn-only on to Lee Hwy. That wouldn’t have changed the traffic flow at all.

Agree that the traffic impact should be zilch, but it is extremely common for people to get in the left turn lane for WB Lee and continue straight into the turn lane for the GWMP (where the officer is parked). Illegal as that is, I’m not sure why APD would go out of their way to enforce it, so I’m wondering if there’s something else going on.

I think several other mornings recently it was two motorcylce officers with their bikes parked on the grass, so this is a different arrangement. On purpose?

I just deflated thinking that the recent enforcement hasn’t been about the crosswalk, but about stopping cars from illegally going straight from the left-only-onto-Lee to the left-only-to-the-GWMP.
Did anyone see ACPD actually stop cars that had blown through the crosswalk? Or stop anyone? (I’ve seen cars stopped, but not the behavior that led to the stop).
*Just realized that they might also be looking for new decals… UGH*
