Wasn’t really a commute at all. Left at normal time and tried to meet GregBain and guycontinental on the Custis but missed them. Decided to go to the MVT and do a loop of Hains to kill time before meeting the CX crew at gravelly point, passed dbb on the 14th st bridge going the wrong way. Did a lap and a half of the CX course with kayakcindy, dcv, guycontinental, JasonB and VVill which was quite the adventure on gatorskins. Made it to HDCC after passing consularrider on the 4MRT. Had coffee with PeteD, arlingtonrider, KLizzotte, and DismalScientist. Got half way to the office before realizing that I forgot my building pass. Rode all the way home and ran into Dirt in falls church. Then I had to drive to work because I was late.

So for those of you counting at home I saw 13 forum members this morning on my non commute. Shawnofthedread, Dickie where you guys? You could have made it 15.

And to think drivers HATE their commutes!

Arguing with/tickling a four-year-old and keeping a seven-year-old motivated — where I normally am when trying to get out of the house early.

What was it with forgetting ID this morning?

This morning’s commute sucked. I believed the damn weather people that it wouldn’t feel colder today because of the lack of wind. Yes, it wasn’t as windy, but it felt a lot colder. I need to dig out my big gloves rather than doubling up on my current gloves. Bright side, I did find a handwarmer from last winter at the bottom of one of my desk drawers.

No morning commute for me today. Sick day, laying low at home. I’ve got a bad case of what our 18 month old has been fighting for the last few days. Thanks, buddy!

Anyway, even if I weren’t sick, I’d not have been able to ride in this AM. My bike’s frame broke last night on the way home. I felt the rear end kind of pop and then get kind of squirrely, so I stopped to check out the culprit. I feared at first that I’d jinxed myself talking about how my self-built rear wheel was holding up well and still as true as the day I made it. Wasn’t that. And the rear tire was fine. Skewer was still nice and tight, and the crank arms were on tight, too. Took off the panniers and found that the drive side chainstay had broken, like this. My heart sank.

This pic is not mine, but it’s the exact same type of break.

Contacted a welder based on a recommendation from a bike mechanic friend and some good reviews on a bike forum, and all I can say is STEEL IS REAL. $40 quote to TIG weld the chro-moly frame, and she’ll be good as new. Try doing that with carbon! ;)

Loving the “gravel grinding” I’m doing at Columbia Pike/WOD intersection these days. My 32’s are right at home.

I had a similar issue. See this thread: http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?5067-Frame-repair&highlight=dropout+weld

Wow, there’s a lot of traffic in the morning! I’m usually running about an hour late and it’s pretty chill after 9:30. Today I tried to join the group riding the CX practice course at Gravelly Point but I was running about an hour late for that. :p Everyone was gone but I saw Dana’s friend.

    I see we’ve discussed this before! :)

Bruce is the guy I’ll be going to. Glad to hear he does good work. Someone spoke highly of him in a forum entry over on bikejournal.com. Sounds like I’m making the right decision re: welders here.

No rust in my case, just metal fatigue, I assume. The frame’s from 1995, but I’ve only had it since April. I’ll have to wait until I get it back to see how badly the paint is damaged/melted. The frame’s black, and part of me is considering a powder coat job on it in the next year or so if I decide to keep it instead of buying another Surly LHT frame, so I may just shoot some black spray primer at it to keep the metal coated with something in the meantime.

My commutes have been a relief. I’ve had a head cold for the past couple of days, and it mostly goes away while cycling.

I also learned that closed-toe sandals and wool socks make decent cool weather footwear. Just enough air flow to feel refreshing.

Actually breaks like that are apparently very easy to repair on carbon frames. My buddy shattered his chainstay on his On One carbon hardtail. He read up on it, bought the carbon fiber sheets + epoxy and did the repair himself. It’s held up great to lots of subsequent abuse. I was skeptical, but he says he is now comfortable repairing anything in the rear triangle (where error tends not to land you on your face). Obviously there are folks like Calfree that do this professionally too :)
