It’s not strictly a biking purchase but I finally got a smart phone and have downloaded strava.
I downloaded Strava this weekend, too. First time out with it I didn’t set it up properly and obtained no data. The second time out – this morning – it only recorded about 1/3 of my commute. I had my phone in my back jersey pocket, so I don’t know if I inadvertantly stopped Strava or what. I do know that in the 4 hours after I started Strava this a.m. that it soaked up 1/2 of my cellphone battery, so I will have to be more vigilant about closing the app.

Photo by @bikepedanticAwesome! I’m very glad to discover that I am a very poor interpreter of street markings that precede the actual work.

Hi. Eads St in Crystal City was repaved in September, I believe, yet the lanes are still unmarked. No pedestrian crossings and no bicycle lane. Whereas my preference would be to stay on MVT and 4MR, I have found that the construction and sidewalk closure along Glebe makes crossing it quite unpalatable so I occasionally ride Eads St. I haven’t been hit yet, it’s true, but I feel a bit exposed and wonder what is taking so long.
Perhaps when repaving a road, there should be a plan to remark it within some period of time.
I noticed the other day heading north on Eads toward 23rd that there are lots of white markings on the brand new pavement – but they aren’t crosswalks and bike lanes – and instead appear to be the markings for new construction. I hope not, but it wouldn’t be the first time I’ve seen new pavement busted wide open for sub-surface repairs.

ParticipantThe W&OD was blocked this morning where it goes underneath Rt. 267 for contruction (before 6 a.m.!), but then, if you go that way you already know this.

I’m factoring days I realistically cannot bike in. Severe weather, after work commitments, etc. Unfortunately, some days will require driving instead of even the Metro. Ideally, I’ll average 9-10 months or better, but as an initial assessment I felt six months a realistic first goal.
Exactly. After 9 miles I better be sweating or its not a workout; even in cooler months. I will not be known as the stinky guy in the office.
Ideally, I’ll leave shoes/belt, a dopp bag, etc at work, but I’ll still need to drag a suit with me.
While we’re on the subject; does anyone have any experience with these garment bags?
Two Wheel Gear – Classic Bike Suit Bag
Henty Wingman Suit BagI’m leaning toward the Two Wheel Gear bag. On the plus side, I could move everything from my seat bag into it plus my lunch, but it’s possibly too big. The Wingman Suit Bag, I don’t want a backpack or sling bag, but figure I can bungee it onto the rack instead, but wondering how crumpled a suit would look.
At work I have brown and black shoes and brown and black belts. I have a suit and a navy blue sport coat along with an assortment of ties. I have all the toiletries at work I need plus an electric razor. I swap out slacks, but at any one time I usually have at least 2 pairs of slacks at work. Tomorrow, like most days, i am only taking underwear, socks and a dress shirt, along with food. My goal is to transport as little as possible. On days that for whatever reason I have to take the Metro or drive I make a point of taking extra stuff so that I don’t have to carry it later on my bike.

ParticipantMy dentist is awesome. Late afternoon I leave work and head to my dentist, who has an office on the 14th floor of a building in Skyline. I get to the building and take my bike with me up to her office. I enter the office, catch the eye of the receptionist, and ask if I can park my bike in the corner of the waiting room like I did the last time I was there. And she replies, with much good cheer, “Of course, Mr. Cox! You always ride your bike here!” And then, everyone in the office preceded to chat me up about bike commuting. Good stuff.

Pleasure meeting you this morning, Vern! Hope to see you again soon.
Thanks, and likewise. It was fun. I was telling Dickie afterwards while riding down the MVT that I really didn’t feel like going to work afterwards. I just wanted to ride some more and call it a day. Alas…

Thanks for the great suggestons and info! I just called Buffalo Wild Wings in Crystal City and it sounds like they can accommodate us well! I agree that that would be a better location (just off the MVT at 2540 Crystal Drive) for the Freezing Saddles kick off, and might be worth considering for the final event too. Would that work well for you all for the kick off? If so, we just need a date!
That’s about a 8 second commute from my office…approved!

That was most certainly him, he left FCCII to do the loop with that thing perched atop his lid. Unless there is another turkey wearing, bell ringing, leaf picking, greeting giving, fast riding cyclist in town, you saw the bonafide Turkey Man.
He was wearing that thing Wednesday morning when he dropped me like a bad habit on the WOD, riding along the walls adjacent to 66.

ParticipantTemperatures have really spiked this afternoon – up to 55 as I write this. My lobster claws will be total overkill this afternoon. Just follow the stream of sweat on the WOD to find me.

Come see Dickie’s latest bodily injury!I’ve never done the coffee club gig…I think I’d like to do this and the caravan from Vienna. I’m a Coffee Club virgin, so please be gentle.

ParticipantI decided to wear a balaclava this morning since it was 17 degrees at my starting point, but that was a big mistake. I got way too warm, causing my feet to get really, really cold. But it was nice to be able to breathe warmed air.

ParticipantIf this is Strava dependent than I’m out as I don’t have any of those new-fangled electronic gizmos.

Raises hand as 1 of the 11. I probably went by Crystal City around 7:45 on the MVT, maybe a little bit earlier and then all the way up to Key Bridge. At the beginning of my ride from south of OT along MVT, I didn’t see another cyclist until almost the airport.
I bet you had one helluva tailwind though because I definitely felt the headwind the whole way. A few big gusts almost knocked me over.
Nope, not in my 11. I went up Eads rather than MVT. By the way, the sewer contruction on Eads is complete and all of the road blockages are removed.
