I used to think that Ubers, especially with MD plates, were the drivers least respectful of the bike lanes in the Clarendon-Court House corridor. Metro shuttle bus drivers are giving the Ubers a good run for the title during the latest surge. I get that buses need to pull into the bike lane to pick up and drop off passengers. But do they need to drive in the lane between stops too? Drivers on the regular numbered bus routes seem to be able to navigate the admittedly narrow lanes on Clarendon & Wilson without creeping over into the bike lanes. Perhaps some remedial driving instruction for the WMATA shuttle drivers is in order? 😡

Typically if I see something that looks recently dropped I let it be or put it in a more prominent place assuming the owner will come looking for it.

On the ride home, I followed this advice and placed the glove on the railing of one of the wooden “bridges” over the joints in the sidewalk. Tried to put it where it would be seen but wouldn’t blow away (which is why I picked it up in the first place). It was gone this morning, hopefully reunited with its rightful owner and not floating down the Potomac.

The “each day” is really key here. If you are even slightly inclined to forget socks or underwear, I strongly recommend leaving a spare pair or two in your desk (or locker if you are so lucky).
    😮

And don’t forget a towel if you’re showering at work! I’ve done that before and resorted to the paper towel dry-off method, but it’s less than optimal.

I keep my suits, ties, belts, and dress shoes at work. I bring in socks, undies, and dress shirts once a week in a pannier. I second the suggestion to stick with no-iron shirts. I use an Eagle Creek packing folder to bring in 5 shirts at a time, then hang them up when I get to the office. I fold them up the night before, but wait until the next morning to cinch down the folder. That seems to keep them pretty wrinkle-free.

One suit at a time, folded gently and placed in a pannier, also stays pretty much wrinkle-free. I fold the coat in half lengthwise, put the folded pants on the bottom half, and then fold the coat over the pants crosswise. Then I wrap the whole bundle in a plastic bag from the dry cleaners before putting it in the pannier. Like dress shirts, hanging up the suit (or putting it on) immediately after arriving seems to help minimize wrinkling.

Anyone else notice horse poop all up and down MVT yesterday? I saw a tweet by Alexandria PD yesterday that a religious group on horseback from Texas was making their way through the city. I assume it was them. Does that make it “holy crap”? (I’m sorry)

Wasn’t on the MVT, but saw 4 young guys–one of whom was carrying a large wooden cross–heading toward Iwo Jima on the 110 MUP coming from Arlington Cemetary.

I regularly take the right lane of Wash Blvd., the part that goes over the Boundary channel, between the on ramp from the Pentagon parking lot and the exit ramp to the southbound GW parkway. The reason I do it is because if I don’t feel safe crossing that second exit ramp when going northbound

Now I finally have an answer to the “how did that bike get there?” question that I have whenever I see the occasional cyclist in the traffic on Washington Blvd. northbound toward Memorial Bridge, while I’m slowing to cross Washington Blvd. just south of Memorial circle. Also, I didn’t know that road was Washington Blvd. I had always thought of it as part of 110 and/or the GW Parkway, and thus thought bikes weren’t permitted.

Agree that 10th is underrated on the comfort scale. During morning and afternoon commute times, I haven’t found it to be that scary.

My quibble is that the clusterf*** intersections at Veitch at Clarendon & Wilson in Courthouse and Wilson/Washington/Clarendon/Irving/Fairfax in Clarendon both deserve USE CAUTION signs. Those intersections are horrendous.

To the cyclist who told me that I dropped a glove on Jefferson Dr. as he passed me just after the 14th St. crossing a bit after 8:00 this morning, thank you! I only had to backtrack a 100 yards or so, and there it was. :) Otherwise, I probably wouldn’t have noticed until it had been pulverized by street traffic.

14th/15th St N from Rhodes to Taft was just repaved, meaning there was clean, unblemished pavement from curb to curb. I swear that by the next day, there already was broken glass in the westbound bike lane in front of the garage entrance to the building on the corner of 15th & Scott. There is always broken glass in that spot. Whenever it gets swept up, fresh broken glass appears again within days. This spot baffles me, because it’s not in front of a bar or restaurant, and it’s not close to a crosswalk or a pedestrian doorway. Is there some sort of broken glass fairy that makes the rounds to ensure that certain spots are always covered?

Here’s a Google maps picture of the spot:

One time I was waiting at a red light on the road with a “don’t wanna unclip” circling cyclist . He was so intent on his circling that he didn’t notice the light change – it was a bit tricky thing passing him without colliding with him.

I’ve waited at a light a couple of times with a cycle vulture circling around too. I would think this would violate the “P” part of being a PAL. Motorists going through the intersection would have no idea whether the cyclist was coming, going, or about to hop in the travel lane.

Is there a Friday Coffee Club at Northside Social? Saw a bunch of bikes locked up there around 8:00am today. I suppose that I could have stopped and asked one of the lycra-clad folks sitting outside, but was in a hurry to get into work.

You: Jogger ahead of me on the MUP by the 110 ramp at Arlington Cemetery, running uphill toward Memorial Ave.

Me: Approaching from behind, “ding ding, ding ding.”

    You: Oblivious.

Me: “Passing on your left! Ding ding.”

    You: Oblivious.

Me: Passing you on the left, as previously announced by bell and voice.

You: Startled to see me on your left, “Jesus Christ!”

Me: If you don’t want to be surprised, you shouldn’t be using earbuds in both ears!

A couple of months ago, I reported to Arlington County (https://topics.arlingtonva.us/reportproblem/) broken glass and debris on Fairfax Dr. north of the pedestrian island at the southeast corner of Fairfax & Glebe. I reported it under “Street Surface Damaged” with a description. It took a few weeks, but the service request was completed, and the street was reported to be swept–I don’t know whether the work was done by Arlington or VDOT. It did look better, although the street sweeper didn’t seem to pick up all of the bits of broken glass.
