Oh and here’s the DC Rainmaker post on this topic: http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2008/09/wine-vs-workouts-effects-of-alcohol.html (Have I really been reading his blog for more than 5 years?!?)
Not exactly a controlled experiment. A sample of 2 workouts? C’mon. (Says the girl whose team’s title sponsor is Dogfish Head

ParticipantWhat I recall from our reverse NoVa Epic was that DaveK was regretting his choice of the cross bike on the gnarly stuff and jabber was regretting his choice of the FS on the flats. So it sorta depends on what kind of experience you want to have. Do you wanna pick slowly through the technical stuff and hammer the flats, or do you want a comfort ride? There was more singletrack on the route than I was expecting, so I was super happy with the hardtail 29er. That’s what I’ll be riding again.

I would like to come, but I’m not comfortable riding on the trails in the dark, so I might only be able to stay for one drink
(I’m coming from Old Town Alexandria.) It would be cool to meet the group, though!
I’ll be going to Del Ray, so you can follow me if you like.
And eminva — I was just giving the gentlemen a hard time! I may hit the segment on the way to HH just to see what all the fuss is about, but you can be sure I’ll be stopping lest anyone pokes into my ride data

ParticipantSaw the smiling faces of Joe from the BID and Zanna this morning:D Didn’t take one of those cinnamon sugar calorie bomb muffins, although I wanted to. Thanks for being out there Crystal City folks!

If you are not drinking until you get to your destination…
Yes, good point, I should have specified this. I do want something I can access while riding. Not while in motion necessarily, but not something I’d need another vessel to drink out of or have to dig into my bag to get at. I do have a cute thermos that I love, but it’s a transport vessel, not a drinking one.
Thanks for the reccos!

HH can be drunken strava segment competition instead?
I think riding that segment drunk would be an extraordinarily bad idea
I just wanted to jump in b/c I talked to Jason about the segment off-line. I encouraged him to come to the HH and, since he and Tim also have a long-standing Strava rivalry (an entirely friendly one), thought it would be funny to grab the KOM beforehand. I needled him to try it b/c I — as you can see earlier — was angling to get a beer for myself! So I wanna to put to bed any misapprehension about the KOM being gotten “at all costs.” It really wasn’t. Jason returned from his ride thinking that he hadn’t gotten it, immediately saying the segment was dangerous and probably ought to get flagged (but didn’t want to ruin the forum fun by doing so). Diving into the details of any questionable Strava segment will certainly reveal some devilish behavior — we’ve discussed that ad nauseam. Who would rather talk about the beer wall?

ParticipantI’d just like to “like” run/bike’s post 10x over. I’m of a similar mind and act in a very similar way. So thank you.
I understand the folks who say it’s not a big deal, but in this whole big wide metro area, cyclist have a few measly miles of that’s just for us. Is it really too much to ask for others to stay out of them?

ParticipantTwo thumbs up for Jabber as a ride leader. I’d definitely be going to these if it weren’t so hard to get to Reston by then.

I’ve always done the ol’ “run along while holding the seat”. As you noted, balance requires a certain speed, and that just takes confidence. If you can reassure them that you’ll be right there to catch them, they can be more willing to try.
Ah, yes, I remember it well. And then the parent just conveniently forgets to say something when they let go. It does, however, require the pedals to be on and the seat to be low enough for feet to touch the ground. There may be whining and protesting and needing assurance that you won’t let go with this method, but kids have a way of forgetting that when they realize they’re pedaling on their own

They’re amazing. They get quite a response on the trail. People seem to speed up/slow down to enjoy the tunes for a short while
