I’m surprised you were charged for work not able to be completed. Is that typical?

I think it was probably charge-worthy, because they spent several hours trying to tap the threads of the self-extracting bolt and such. The amount struck me as a little high, but not outrageous. I was actually surprised at how little FB charged me.

That looks like the way to go if this motorcycle tool doesn’t work. You squeezed a hacksaw blade in there, yes? Mine looked a little too tight to get a sawzall in there, it’d probably bind.

I actually let FreshBikes handle it, since it’s a carbon frame and they sold it to me. I assume they used a hacksaw. They charged me like $20, which was less than BicycleSpace charged me for their aborted attempt.

I’m not really seeing the purpose of the reply. Just saw the article cited in the Axios daily email and shared it without comment one way or another. arlrider makes a good point about normalizing by population size though.

It wasn’t meant as a criticism of you. It’s the sensationalist reporting on some pretty minor injuries from scooters while no one bats an eye at the carnage caused by cars.

On the issue of normalizing the stats, I just don’t buy it. Maybe if you just count all injuries as the same, but people aren’t getting crushed and maimed by scooters, and scooters don’t crash through houses and storefronts on a daily basis. I’d wager that, even accounting for population and miles traveled, the level of economic loss caused by car crashes far outweighs that caused by injuries from all other modes combined…especially once you factor in externalities like pollution.

Maybe just make the trails better instead of handwringing about 15mph e-scooters and e-skateboards?

I have confirmed with my contact at the George Washington Memorial Parkway that the construction site next to the Mt. Vernon Trail is a staging area for the project to rehabilitate Memorial Bridge. Specific details are light right now but there will be some impacts to the trail during the three year project. Work will begin in September. Initial work is focused on ensuring the bridge can handle the weight of traffic and construction equipment and the bridge will still be useable for bike and peds.

NPS wants to proactively communicate impacts to trail users and I’ll be in regular contact for updates to push out to the forum.

For an overview of the rehabilitation project, please visit:

Impacts to the trail, but not the actual GWMP, I presume…

Second day of e-bike commuting. My intention isn’t to totally replace my conventional bikes, but rather to e-bike on days where I’m too lazy to ride. Typically, those are days I ride my motorcycle, but now with the work on the GWMP and the heat, I’d rather avoid my motorcycle until summer is over.

Anyway, today I rode in my work clothes…12.5 miles with one big hill (1 mile, 3% average grade) and some rollers at the end, and I wasn’t sweaty when I got in. Total riding time is similar to my un-boosted commute, but it’s nice to just relax and enjoy the cool (relatively) breeze.

I’ve had someone absolutely swear to me that the stuff on new chains is the best lube around. (No joke or sarcasm on my part. Maybe there was on his part and I just missed it.)

I think that’s a Sheldon Brown-ism, IIRC. In my experience, that “lube” is a magnet for gunk, and I now clean it off before I install a new chain.

Edit: Should’ve refreshed the page before I replied…

Does the longer wheel base make the ride feel different?

Not really. Harder to take sharp corners, but feels like a regular hybrid. I think it’s shorter than a true longtail. The 2018 model is an aluminum frame, but it’s a smooth ride overall.

It came with running boards, but I left them off for now to save weight. This thing is not a featherweight…

The RadWagon has arrived. This is the heaviest, clumsiest bike I’ve ever ridden and the first bike to truly put an idiot grin on my face at the first stroke of the pedals.

how it performs as the temperature drops.

Ah shit…I forgot about the cold weather factor. I can charge the battery inside overnight but it’ll have to stay outside while I’m at work. Thankfully, I don’t think my commute will be pushing anywhere near maximum range, so I expect I’ll be okay in winter. Also, having boost for my PM commute is much less important.

Bringing this back around…I’m really interested to hear about the long-term quality of the Juiced. I don’t doubt that the components on a Trek Super Commuter or whatever are nicer than a CrossCurrent (or a Rad), but your typical Specialized or Trek is twice the price of a typical Juiced (and lacks a throttle and is less powerful). Is a Bosch or Shimano mid-drive system really that much better?

I gambled on “no,” and we’ll see how that turns out, but I’m curious what others’ experiences are.
