ParticipantDoh. It’s February.

ParticipantThey’re at the shop and I’m at work so I can only virtually adore them. I’ve got a older Hope set on my Titus (four or five years old now) though so I can do a side by side comparison when the wheels get built (velocity ailerons).
I’m starting to go down the rabbit hole of another wheel build too for the Jamis since it’s a 33# beast . It’s a 27.5+ and there aren’t a lot of options for that right now (plus I need the boost 148 hub) so I’m waiting. The bike has lime green accents though so it’s almost certain I’ll go with the CK green or sour apple boost hubs when they’re released this spring.

ParticipantOh yeah. Purple Hope Pro 4’s.

I love the feeling of the front tire washing out in the slush and then [hopefully] finding pavement before it actually washes slides out. It is a lot of engagement — and lots of fun — riding in these conditions, but also a lot more work.
Twice now in as many days, I’ve read your words and thought “man, he crazy.”

I’m thinking of taking your route described here home this evening, but am a bit leery about riding on those roads at dusk/dark. Thoughts?
According the W&OD FB page, the trail has been plowed from Smiths Switch to just east of Hunter Mill, heading towards Vienna and then from the other direction (heading west) they’ve made it from Idylwood Park to Gallows and also heading towards Vienna. Hopeful the two plows will meet in the middle today and with the weekend warm up we’ll have clear-enough trails on Monday.

New bike for wet commutes! Jamis Bosanova ordered from last year’s production (THE last year of production) and picked up yesterday from the fine folks at Bikenetic. VERY excited!
Nice! I was there when you picked it up and was totally eyeing your bike.

I try to avoid any commute through Georgetown via M street on a good day, but right now it seems to be the only connection into the city (from Key). Under best conditions I would only recommend this to a confident (if not foolhardy) cyclist at M street quickly devolves into “Thunderdome.”
Agreed! I only take Key when I’m coming in super early so that I’m riding through Georgetown around 6:30-40am. And honestly the only reason I switched to Key is because the glare of oncoming traffic there along TR Island makes me see too many halos (poor night vision exacerbated by grimy contacts). Once days are longer and I’m not coming in so early, I’ll go back to TR Bridge.

My plan is to take the Metro from Reston to EFC and then ride my bike the rest of the way to Crystal City. I plan to get to the Metro between 9 and 9:30. I know that bikes are forbidden between 7-10, but thought peak ridership will actually be around 10 because of the FEDS late start. I also anticipate that the Metro station manager won’t follow my logic and will literally follow the rules and make me wait.
The metro was standing room only at Dunn Loring this am at 8:30…so good luck with that.

ParticipantI’m with klizotte. Give the plow drivers a break. I was out this am after they came through my neighborhood and was able to get my mile in before they came back.
And with a hat and my ski helmet with ear flaps plus the wind, there’s no way I’d hear them until they were close.

There are a lot of reasonably priced houses as you go south on Gallows road, although the development around Dunn Lorring station probably has increased prices since the last time I looked. There are also a lot of apartments/condos further south in Mosaic (the area at Gallows/Lee Hwy) and around the metro station. All a very easy ride to Tysons, with equally easy access to the W&OD and the Orange Line.
I live close to the Dunn Loring metro. There are a TON of new housing complexes (mostly rental) but it’s not cheap. It might have been a few years ago, but not now.

I’m in; dcv has promised a way-too-fast escort.
Our office is closed tomorrow so it’s 50/50 as to whether I drag my ass out of bed.

If there’s road salt about, I don’t completely clean mine after each ride, but I do clean at the end of each day, then relube it. No rust.
How exactly do you clean it? Do you use any special kind of lube over the winter?
I don’t have access to a hose or have a private garage and my bikes don’t fit in my tub. So far this hasn’t been much of an issue because I don’t actually really clean my bikes! I took my old cx bike to a friends to hose it off before I sold it (he did most of the drive train) and I used baby wipes once on the warbird…But, I actually really should clean my bikes.
