They did a crappy, crappy job of signing the detour. I knew the way I SHOULD go but I followed the official signs and it took me out to Wilson.
I noticed that this morning as well. The detour sign is pointing towards 9th Rd N, which does not bring you anywhere near the Custis Trail on the other side of 66.

Did the county apply for FEMA money?
Yes. But if approved, it could take months or even years to recoup the funds from them.

ParticipantThey actually work quite nicely and now that Wahoo has added radar support for the Garmin Varia, you will probably see a lot more of them. I have a few friends that have them and refused to switch to Wahoo (even though Garmin’s computers are very lacking in user-friendly-ness) because of the lack of radar support.

ParticipantI also got a chance to ride one of the new CVP bikes. I too was really impressed with the brakes. The older style CaBi’s brakes leave a LOT to be desired, especially coming from years of hydraulic disc brakes. The new Sturmey Archer drums modulate well and stop without that “oh shit” moment that the older brakes have. I found the front basket to be just as well as the older racks for my needs. I was a little worried about my water bottle leaking on my iPad since things were at a pretty flat angle, but it was fine. The bell was a nice surprise. I did not use the shifter other than to put it in the hardest gear, so I have no opinion on the shifting yet.
Overall, I thought the new bikes improved on a lot and hope to see more of them in the fleet.

ParticipantSuper glad to see you come out and race! Sorry I did not get much of a chance to cheer you on. Unfortunately, I was busy ALL day. Can not wait to see you racing cross in a few weeks!

Yesterday, there were two ACPD cruisers parked in the Quincy PBL near the auto shop just east of Glebe on the northbound side. There were no officers or activity to be seen. I doubt it was an emergency response situation as the cruisers were neatly tucked into the protected bike lane, making sure not to block the DRIVEWAY TO THE PARKING LOT OF THE AUTO SHOP. It didn’t look like they had driven over the flex posts, but instead had taken the time to back in.
And did I mention there was a parking lot they could have stopped in? If that didn’t work, there were legal parking spots on Quincy up the street, and plenty of room on 5th to park legally or not.
I hope you took photos and forwarded them to the appropriate folks.

Is a driver legally considered to have been “involved” in a situation like this, when they did not experience any collision or injury themselves but committed actions that arguably contributed to or caused the incident?
Absolutely.

So today was the Bianchi’s inaugural commute, inaugural Coffee Club, and inaugural “extra riding home beyond commute route”…
Took PYT to Braddock Metro, over to Slater’s Lane, to MVT, to Crystal City connection to Waterpark, up to Long Bridge Park, back to Eads, 4MR, home. All in all, pretty enjoyable, terrible saddle not withstanding! I was happy to find the steep hill at the Waterpark didn’t spank me.
However, as I was planning to circle Long Bridge Park, I got to the end of the long promenade to find the left-turn continuation now closed for construction. So I had to do a U-turn, onto the pea-gravel section… And, didn’t slow enough… and sadly, the bike slid right out from under me! Luckily I didn’t go down with it… somehow, I got a foot out of the toe-cage, caught myself with a little one-leg hopping squat, but the bike slipped out of my hand and the fork hit the gravel — so that near-mint, 27-years-in-storage purple paint job now has its first, all-too-soon road rash

The bike is now officially yours! We always joke that the bike is never really yours until you crash it.
Head to your nearest drug store/Target and pick up some nail polish in the closest colour you can find. It will cover up the scratches nicely.

… and so has my hip.
I am doing well, physical therapy started Tuesday and God is so good.
On Friday (7/12/2019) morning I took a very hard spill on the Arlington Loop on the boardwalk just after Roosevelt Island. Yes, at the quick left/right turn which I “know” is very dangerous, especially when wet. I thought I was at a safe speed and turning radius. The bicycle slid out from under me and I went down on my right leg – very hard – and slid to a stop. I couldn’t move my right leg. All of the passing cyclists stopped and offered help. Thank you!
I thought after a brief recovery I could get up. Even though there were no visible broken bones or bleeding and I stayed conscious, I could not get up. Someone called 911 for me.A big Thank You to Arlington EMTs Novak and Tate who helped me. And a special thank you to the four cyclists, who I do not know, who stayed with me the whole time. They even helped the EMTs lift me on the gurney (an actually fun experience). One of the four, Anthony?, took my bicycle, helmet and shoes and put them in the ambulance. At the hospital ER, one EMT wheeled my bicycle INSIDE and placed it outside the room! (I so wish there was a picture of that!)
The diagnosis was a broken hip, specifically the top of the femur near the ball joint. Surgery was on Saturday morning. The doctor inserted a long rod and two screws into my femur through three small incisions.
I have no restrictions on movement, but there is pain from the fall and from the surgery. The first in-home PT and OT sessions went well. My muscles need to be retrained on how to move the leg.God is good. So many people have offered help and are praying for a quick recovery. Having been very active – riding my bicycle outside every day for over 1.5 years (thanks #FS2018), and taking a strength and flexibility group fitness class really helps.
Ride carefully.
/glennI am SO sorry to hear this. But I am glad that things are going as well as they can be given the circumstances. I will pass the thanks on to the medics that were there and definitely give them a high five for ensuring the bike was taken care of. I am sending healing thoughts your way. Keep us updated on how things are or if you need anything!

Thanks! Reji and I had fun riding around it this morning practicing a little off road action.

Sunyata: what pressure did you run your tubeless 40 tires at? Pretty low?
I was running lower than I should have considering how much pavement there was on the second day. I think I was right around 28/r 26/f, which was perfect for day one. I would have liked to have put a bit more air and ran 32/r 30/f on day two. But I forgot. Whoops.
