Ugh, so sorry to hear Glenn. Casey Kane had a break like that a few years back, and I also messed my hip up (torn cartilage) a few years back. Hip surgery is not fun. If I can offer 1 piece of advice: keep up with the PT. I extended mine around 6-8 weeks past the minimum, and I think that really allowed me to maintain flexibility and mobility. If you need anything, let me know.
July 18, 2019 at 11:33 pm #1099816komorebiParticipantOh no! Sorry to hear about the crash, Glenn. I hope the recovery goes quickly and smoothly. If there’s anything I can do to help, please let me know.

I’m hoping that the level of cycling activity that you had will make recovery quicker, both with muscle tone and a robust immune system that will prevent infection complications from the metal bits. You may be good as new and back on a bike before you know it!

I am doing well, physical therapy started Tuesday and God is so good.
On Friday (7/12/2019) morning I took a very hard spill on the Arlington Loop on the boardwalk just after Roosevelt Island. Yes, at the quick left/right turn which I “know” is very dangerous, especially when wet. I thought I was at a safe speed and turning radius. The bicycle slid out from under me and I went down on my right leg – very hard – and slid to a stop. I couldn’t move my right leg. All of the passing cyclists stopped and offered help. Thank you!
I thought after a brief recovery I could get up. Even though there were no visible broken bones or bleeding and I stayed conscious, I could not get up. Someone called 911 for me.A big Thank You to Arlington EMTs Novak and Tate who helped me. And a special thank you to the four cyclists, who I do not know, who stayed with me the whole time. They even helped the EMTs lift me on the gurney (an actually fun experience). One of the four, Anthony?, took my bicycle, helmet and shoes and put them in the ambulance. At the hospital ER, one EMT wheeled my bicycle INSIDE and placed it outside the room! (I so wish there was a picture of that!)
The diagnosis was a broken hip, specifically the top of the femur near the ball joint. Surgery was on Saturday morning. The doctor inserted a long rod and two screws into my femur through three small incisions.
I have no restrictions on movement, but there is pain from the fall and from the surgery. The first in-home PT and OT sessions went well. My muscles need to be retrained on how to move the leg.God is good. So many people have offered help and are praying for a quick recovery. Having been very active – riding my bicycle outside every day for over 1.5 years (thanks #FS2018), and taking a strength and flexibility group fitness class really helps.
Ride carefully.
/glennI am SO sorry to hear this. But I am glad that things are going as well as they can be given the circumstances. I will pass the thanks on to the medics that were there and definitely give them a high five for ensuring the bike was taken care of. I am sending healing thoughts your way. Keep us updated on how things are or if you need anything!
July 19, 2019 at 12:27 pm #1099820StardusterParticipantbikesnick, so sorry this happened to you. Heal up!
That this still happened, even after extreme caution…wow. I will deploy these pictures again as an offered solution- *Concrete* boardwalk, from Chincoteague heading to Assateague.
Don’t let power tell you it can’t be done. It already has.
“Diabolical” should never be used to describe a bike path.
P.S. Chincoteague, VA, one year ago.
July 19, 2019 at 2:19 pm #1099822wheelswingsParticipantOh no. Heal fast, bikesnick. Yes! It makes a huge difference to be fit–you will recover far better and quicker.
I am sharing your details with my contacts, and also passing along Starduster’s information on concrete, which is used in Virginia Beach and elsewhere.
Sending hugs,
w&wJuly 19, 2019 at 4:18 pm #1099824bikesnickParticipantThank you all, for the encouraging words. And for the offers to help, I am overwhelmed.
I am receiving great support from my family, close friends, and my church family.
Today’s PT session was great.
/glennJuly 19, 2019 at 4:23 pm #1099825CaseyKane50ParticipantGlenn,
Sorry to hear about your crash. Breaking a hip is definitely not fun, but it beats a head injury. As has been suggested, following the guidance from your doctor and the OT and PT therapists will get you back on your bike before you know it. Two months after my surgery to replace my hip, many hour of PT and an admonition from my doctor “not to fall”, I was back riding my bike.
July 19, 2019 at 8:37 pm #1099831Steve OParticipantGod, this pisses me off.
It’s such an outrageous example of the enormous disparity regarding safety given to people on bikes as vs. people in cars. Imagine if a section of the GWMP saw the same ratio of crashes at a single location (x crashes per trip, whatever number that might be) as the Trollheim? There would be several a day I imagine. Would NPS take action? Like fast? Hah..ya think?
Way more than 1/2 of the people I know who regularly use this section of trail have gone down there at least once. I’ve crashed there twice: once when I was naive and unaware how dangerous it was and then again even though I was aware. I was with Boomer just a couple of months ago when he went down and cracked his helmet. I’ve gone through there on at least three occasions when there have been people who have crashed and are regaining their composure and/or assessing their physical status and bike condition. I would be willing to bet that every single time it rains at least one person crashes there.Be well, Bikesnick. I propose a happy hour for you once you are in condition to attend. Let us know. Your drinks are on me.
July 21, 2019 at 10:19 pm #1099861DeweyParticipantSorry for your injury Glenn, PT worked wonders for me. God speed your recovery.
July 22, 2019 at 7:03 pm #1099878dasgehParticipantSo sorry this happened.
At this point, this is a known danger that NPS has done nothing — not even signage — to mitigate. They should be held liable.

Dear Glen, so sorry about your crash & broken hip but hearten to learn of good Samaritans, God and your intact spirit.
That appropriately named Trollhein intersection on the MVT boardwalk has got to be one of the most accident prone pieces of cycling infrastructure in the greater DC area (aside from the nearby “intersection of doom”). I myself have crashed at that same spot at least twice, the last time I even cracked open my Cap Bike share helmet (which was kindly replaced by @Emm:-).
Hopefully our mishaps will not be in vain now that count is being kept, and can be used to convince the NPS to make some much needed safety improvements on that perilous and well travelled junction.May the healing force be with you.

Bump.
January 4, 2020 at 10:03 pm #1102337AmeliaParticipantJust went down on the curve coming northbound this afternoon… probably fractured my ulna, hit my head (in a helmet thankfully), and bruised legs. Still waiting on my x-ray.
Two teenagers had just gone down before me apparently going south. They checked on me. Then a scooter user almost went down going south.
I’m annoyed. I had two miles left on my Arlington loop…
