Don’t worry Gillian, it’s easily moved. You’re going to like the way this looks.
Is it a bike/ped counter? That’s my guess.

ParticipantRt. 110 trail was plowed. A few small icy patches, but all in all it was in great shape. I was shocked and very pleased.
South Cap St. Bridge was unpassible IMO. High snow that was heavy and wet mixed with powder. I had to walk it.
I like the idea of saying on what…..so, I was on 26×1.9″ studded tires, fairly low PSI (below 40 I think), mounted to the Disc Trucker.

I swear I had a headwind in both directions
About half way thru my 45 minute commute this morning, I laughed out loud as I realized that I still didn’t know which way the wind was blowing. I would go from flying down the road with a tailwind to being basically stopped in my tracks by a headwind.
Luckily by the time I got out of Arlington and into more open spaces, it turned out to be a tailwind!

That’s funny. I always found the climb easier on 14/15th through Courthouse because you don’t have that really steep up and then down again that’s on the Custis by the ped entrance/stairs.
I’m not sure where you mean by the stairs. Are you talking like down past Italian Store? I exit the Custis and take Veicht to Key to get back to Ballston to avoid some of the climbing on the Custis beyond that point, so perhaps I’m just not thinking of the location. The 14th/15th climb I’m just pathetic on.
Basically I’m lazy is what I’m saying.

14th Street Bridge is safer.
I would agree with this for the most part certainly, however some of it depends on the time of day. In the early morning GWP is empty enough that I go 110 trail to Memorial Bridge, because I’d rather avoid the Lynn/Lee intersection than anything else, and also prefer surface roads to trails when they are extremely empty (sometimes empty trails creep me out), and going this way involves only 1 GWP crossing. I also go this way because going south on Ohio Dr. in the early morning is much easier than being blinded by headlights on the MVT going south. In the evening I take 14th St. to MVT to Custis because crossing the GWP is harder, and going uphill thru Courthouse that way is harder.
I guess what people are saying it “it depends.” There are a number of really good ways to go from there, especially depending on what part of Rosslyn you are coming from. All the ways indicated here work very well, it will just depend on what works best on your balance of things.

It’s the plow sculpture outsde the DC Evidence Control Facility near the old DC Village on DC Village Lane SW. Just at the end (or beginning depending on your direction) of the Oxon Cove trail which links SW DC to National Harbor and the Wilson Bridge. My bike commute takes me through here.
Cool photo thanks for sharing.
Do you mind sharing your commute route? I get bored taking S Cap St Bridge thru the city sometimes, and wouldn’t mind understanding how to get from that area (say Bolling) down to the Wilson Bridge. It should be noted that I am *somewhat* risk adverse and so riding on something like South Cap (roadway) wouldn’t be my favorite.

Of particular note for cyclists is the removal of much or all of Water Street. The new buildings will be constructed up to Maine Ave. (A cycle track is planned for Maine Ave. See the next post below.)
Thanks for providing all the info in one place. It’s a bummer that Water St. might be closed for a long period of time (it’s on my commute route), but what can you do.
For those looking to get to the Navy Yard/Nats Park/Annacosita area, if you don’t want to ride Maine/M St for the whole length, my suggestions is riding the Case Bridge, and then Maine –> 7th –> I St. It makes the time on Maine short.

That stretch of the Custis is easily avoidable on relatively calm streets (except in Rosslyn itself):

The map has you going the opposite way on Lynn, which I imagine is not how you do it, unless on sidewalks? Just curious because I rode 25’s today, so I think the Custis will still be unpassable. I can’t decide between this way or leaving the MVT and cutting up to the 110 trail to avoid the troll bridge.

Dunno, but they are wearing my favorite cycling coat!
Mine too! The only issue I have with it is that it is pretty easy to overheat in, because it is so warm. Inbetween temps (like high 30s, 40s) can be tricky with that jacket and what to wear under it.

ParticipantNice little winter riding photo on the morning notes of arlnow.com this morning. Is this any of our forum friends?

ParticipantFrom this a.m.’s commute:
Rt. 110 Trail is about 30% clear. Still needed wide tires or studs depending on traffic (if you had to leave the clean line), but all in all not bad.
Memorial bridge path was clear.
Ohio Drive is clear.
Water St. is clear.
Annacostia Riverwalk Trail by the Titanic Memorial is snow covered and somewhat icy.
South Cap St. Bridge is a disaster. Really rough on the on and off ramp (downstream side).Steve

ParticipantThank you all. I feel much better now.

ParticipantThings were pretty easy on 26×1.5″ tires with little tread. There was pretty good dusting in some areas but nothing worse from Ballston to South Cap St Bridge. Snow seemed to get harder the further south and east I got, which is the opposite of normal. This was from 550-635 or so.

I think I’ll try to keep up a semi-regular ‘sunrise coffee club’ especially as it gets a bit warmer out!
All of the coffee clubs start a little too late for my work, but if this one stays at sunrise, eventually it will hit my commute times! I will be certain to join if/when it does….
