I give very high praise for the Take a Look mirror. Love mine to death. I put mine on my regular eyeglasses, which are what I wear for riding. It can also be put onto the visor of a helmet if you’d prefer, or to the helmet directly with an optional helmet adapter.

+1 I’ve had a Take a Look mirror for more than a decade (actually 2; I lost one) and have given them as gifts.

Speak for yourself. My toes and most of the rest of me feels a lot warmer.

Hey, we’ll get to do it again tomorrow morning.

Actually, it looks like the low tomorrow will not drop below 10, so the single-digit recognition will just be for Jan. 7, midnight to 10am (unless there’s another arctic blast later this winter)

That’s not to say tomorrowmorning will not also be cold–just not cold enough to win a pointless recognition.

If someone can help me with the data, I will add another prize.

Special recognition for anyone who rode while the temp was single digits. So essentially between about midnight last night and 10am this morning. If someone is able to compile a list, I can award each of them an ice cube at the pointless prizes happy hour.

Wind chill as low as -15F, and that’s if you’re standing still, not riding a bike.

A few hardy souls might be cycling on Tuesday, but I seriously doubt I’ll be riding outside that morning. If I do any bike-related activity, it will be on a spin bike, preferably while watching one of the good James Bond movies.

I ignore the wind chill number, because as a cyclist, there is always wind chill. We make our own wind. So however you dress for 25 degrees that works, is actually correct for 15 or whatever the wind chill value is for the wind you make.
Because I was commuting e-bound this morning, the wind was at my back–reducing the wind chill number. So it was probably at least zero for me!

Actually, I layered one too many, and was sweating on my ride in this morning. If only it had been -7 instead…….

Have to wait for the next side bet, since I’m at (or maybe 2-3 pounds below) my preferred weight.
But I am totally rooting for all of you who have stepped up!!

I didn’t make a resolution at the beginning of the year, but after FS I resolved to get at least 300 miles per month. So far I’ve made it, but I still have 24 miles left for December with three days remaining. I will make that happen on Mon or Tue.

Actually made it happen on Sunday after the rain stopped, so I made the 300/month with total mileage on the year of 4300+

What I like most is that probably 70% of my riding is transportation–going somewhere–rather than just riding. I like the just riding, too, but would love to see a lot more people on bikes going somewhere and using their bike as transportation. I like to tell people that a bike just makes you a “fast pedestrian.” You can hop on it and go somewhere: no special clothes, no high-tech stuff, no long preparation; just go.

    See you soon, I hope.

If my neighbors hold a loud, obnoxious party, do I get alcohol banned from the whole state? Wouldn’t that help solve “the problem?”

When I was commuting on the CCT, there were days in the winter I could ride literally from Bethesda to Chain Bridge and encounter perhaps 2-3 cyclists coming the other way (on at least 2 occasions I was the only trail user at all). No peds; zero. Disclosure: I regularly broke the 15mph limit in MoCo when the trail was empty. However, 15 is even too fast on summer eves in June when the entire community is out on the trail.

I’ve also reverse commuted on the W&OD, and winter mornings can be pretty lonely–not even opportunities for conflict. If I feel like flying along and seeing how I might stack up, that seems like fun.

Flagging segments will not stop the crazies from riding fast. Responsible riders (the majority) will use judgment about when it is appropriate to blast (yes, I’ve blasted the Falls->Falls segment a couple times, but have aborted many more times as courtesy to other trail users) and when not.

How do you know, RayMo, that these riders are even using Strava? Did you ask them as the whizzed by? Do you think flagging the segments will cause them to ride differently? Or will it just irk them so that they start buzzing every ped who looks like his name might be Ray?
Also, there are other similar apps out there, and they may even have their own on-board devices tracking speed and cadence, etc.

Sorry, I disagree with your actions.

Same goal next year: 300/month plus at least one century (I did two this year.)

See you next Thursday eve, F Saddlers.
