For those interested in an interesting solution, I posted this a couple of years ago. The beauty of it is that it requires no new bridges or tunnels and removes the conflict entirely. The ugly of it is that it requires a lot of players (NPS, VDOT, and a private landowner) to agree.

    I’ve been thinking lately:

How much does it cost the County (direct costs like road maintenance and police, or even indirect, like congestion on the roads and reduced safety) when a car drives 1 mile? Let’s say $X for now.

You get the idea. We could put dollar amount on their foolishness of not clearing the trails.

Or a very simple calculation might go like this:
Number of cars that drive on my street – x per day (not many; it’s a side residential street)
Number of people who use the trail near my house – 3-10x per day (estimated) (a lot- it’s a major commuter route and also used by peds to access EFC Metro)

Cost to plow a mile of residential streets like mine – $xxxx
Cost to plow a mile of major commuter route trail – $xx

    It’s a no brainer.

I think I went on the slowest sleaze ride ever today. I thought I would just tool around the neighborhood with the kid in the weehoo, but alas, she insisted on riding her own little bike with training wheels. She put in a valiant effort, but our average speed was 2.4 miles per hour. But, she had a smile on her face and quite a sense of accomplishment at the end. I may need to sign her up for a team.

I once had a Strava segment of 0.2 mph.

My Google translater says that means: “Team three are going to sordid bicycle very serious”
I’m never going to sordid bicycle. Or if I do it won’t be serious.

I cannot believe that I just spent my lunch hour going across the river for this photo only to get back to my computer and see I was beaten by 20 mins. Ouch!

I was working on an idea for one of these, but it was pathetic in comparison to Dave’s. I will now humbly go about my usual business.

…. big icy fustercluck in the next couple of days.

Given that we’ve got what looks like 2 weeks of below freezing temps (with only a couple of exceptions), this is going to be a really tough January on the trails–especially on the shady spots, which will never melt.

Rode in on my 26×1.5″ schwalbe marathons, could have used bit more grip, but no spills and a few fun slides.

W&OD from Falls Church: Crispy and bumpy, look out for icy footprints and previous tire tracks.
Custis: Pretty much the same, take it slow on two sisters
Key Bridge was covered in salt and slush
M St: a few icy patches near 30th st. take the lane
Back side of the white house is a little icy on the smooth stones
Penn ave bike lanes were too icy and frozen to be safe
Dirt path on the mall was REALLY FUN!!! Particularly with the wind at my back and snowdrifts blowing just a few mph than i was traveling, it made for a really nice morning

I rode only the section between Patrick Henry and EFC going westbound (to the metro), against the wind–on my 3-speed toodler bike. Snow was deep and there were minor ruts underneath from footprints. Did not fall over, but had to go really slow (headwind assured that). I do not have studded tires, so was unable to get enough traction to get up the Brandymore Castle rise and had to walk it up.

Seems like with enough ambition it’s possible–especially with a MTB and/or studded tires. But you’ll get tired. Good luck!

    This also qualifies for Taylor:

YES! Harrison’s favorite horse was called, ‘Whitey.” Tallula’s restaurant replaced the old, venerated Whitey’s on Washington Blvd. at Pershing.

I often make a quick run to the coffee shop or the grocery as my only ride for a particular day. Call it sleaze if you like, but as long as you are out there on the bike, it counts.
