*Now* to The Pike:

Up S. Joyce St. past the detour required to rebuild the Pike to this new intersection. The road is only 2 lanes wide here with barriers on all sides. You are honestly better on the sidewalk here, even though crosswalks at either end (the Pike, and Army-Navy Dr/S. 12th) are painfully *not* bike friendly.

For the moment, it appears that Columbia Pike traffic is being routed along the “Navy Annex side” of Southgate. Which leaves the cemetery side open for bike traffic, with only parked vehicles to deal with. That 2nd image however…is unacceptable. Just…NO.

The newly created S. Nash St. They have made this road detour 4 lanes wide as much as they can, for benefit of this major bus route. Note that you cannot get to there from the bike detour. So, unless you are very comfortable taking the lane here, I will recommend continuing to use S. Orme St, and…

The following is a Columbia Pike travel update +:

Now that the old Navy Annex/AF Memorial potion of Columbia Pike is now closed for reconstruction, I decided to take a tour of the Southgate detour, to relay how “bike friendly” it truly is. And along the way, I decided, “Hell, let’s document all the construction detours on my route!” So…

This is the older section of the Doctors Run connector, which starts at S. 12th St & S. Quincy, and joins up with the newer illuminated section (connected to Randolph Elementary School) and on down to S. George Mason Dr. Pavement here has become severely broken up, and flaking away on the outside in spots, enough so that if I were still leading rides, I could no longer send my group through here with any feeling of safety.

This stretch *is* a part of the 12th St. Bike Boulevard. Who do we petition to get it repaired?

The Valve Cap Fairy made an appearance at Henry Dunbar’s on July 4, and blessed Das Kettler with a set of red valve caps that *work perfectly* with the grocery-getter’s silver and raspberry paint. Merci, Steve O!

Is this a consequence of its rail yard past?

An update from my fall coming home from AFCC last weekend. I finally went back to the “scene of the crime” and did some accident reconstruction. This was a bus stop on S. Clark St, at 23rd St. S., Crystal City, Arlington. On any other day, I would be taking a lane on this street. I didn’t on Saturday because race course fencing was still up, and I was determined to find a detour. Which I paid for. I had evidence- chalky concrete dust well up the sidewall. Instead of riding the curb edge I tiptoed around the back side of all the sign structures. I thought this bit of concrete did me in, but look at the drop-off from concrete to grass. I did not see this in time. To be fair, this hazard can happen anywhere. Be safe, all!

#EasyRider, keep us updated. I agree, a full traffic light should be considered here, especially since the new hi-rise on the old Westmont site is going to add to population and traffic volume. It requires patience & alertness in tandem to cross half-safely here.

I went looking for photos of this configuration, pre-1950. That was difficult. It was easier to find its history, starting with where Tiber Creek became the Washington Canal, which became B St. NW, which became Constitution Ave. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constitution_Avenue

This would make a hell of a Jeopardy question. I knew of its past- look on a Google map and you will see the lineup of trees planted along the original route. Now I must find a photo of this spot *before* it was forever changed by the freeway ramps of the TR Bridge.

One day later (still sore, but better, thank you) and I’m having a “What were you thinking?!” moment. Crossing Rt. 1 at 23rd St. S is a *dreadful* crossing for all modes (and why should that be?), and there was a bit of distance between alternate crossings at S. Glebe Rd. in one direction, and the underpasses at 18th, 15th, and 12th in the other. I just wanted to get to Eads, and the protected bike lane. And I paid for my “shortcut”.

That dodgy bit of sidewalk on Clark? Avoid it. Do as I say, not as I did.
