I’m looking for something inexpensive but suitable for biking in (Crazy, I know). For a while I wore Betabrand bike jeans all winter but then they stopped making mens pants, and I got tired of wearing through $100 pants. I don’t need padding. I need pockets. Thin is ok, I often wear thermal tights underneath. I don’t want to have to cuff the bottom.

Anyone have anything the love that holds up pretty well but isn’t crazy expensive?

These Sahara Path Pants from REI seem to be what you describe. They are thin, inexpensive, and they have pockets. I have never worn them for winter biking but they kept me dry during summer rains.

Clarification on rules, because you know I will need it: When you say “It has to be on a bike ride on the day it was requested,” is that a ride that starts on the day it was requested, or is it okay if it is found on the day it is requested but on a ride that started the day before? E.g., my ride starts at 11:55pm on Saturday, and I find an item at 12:05 am on Sunday. If it is has to be on a ride that starts on the day the item was requested, finding an item after midnight won’t count for either day–the item will have been found on a Saturday ride, so it can’t be Sunday’s item, but it can’t be Saturday’s item because the post can’t be made until Sunday. While ending the ride at 12:04 and starting a new one at 12:05 would at least enable me to find Sunday’s item, I hate to do that since it often loses me points due to the system that front-loads points.

I dealt with this last year by finding a lot of items at 11:55pm, and desperately hoping that neither freezing fingers nor lack of a cell signal would keep me from posting by 11:59pm. (I had only one miss in the past two years, and the circumstances of that one were so dire they gave me credit anyway.) And I’ll do that again this year if that’s what the rules require. But I’d just like to clarify ahead of time.

Hi. An item requested on a certain day must be posted/submitted by midnight. For example, the Wordle word on Dec 16 was Globe. That photo must be submitted anywhere between 0:01 AM when Dec 16 begins, and 11:59 PM when Dec 16 ends. I know the 0:01-11:59 time period misses two minutes of Dec 16. That’s just because I tried to avoid writing 0:00-0:00. I hope my explanation makes sense.

So, if I played today, I would’ve posted one of these photos.

I’m thinking of either taking the metro to the end and biking back home or doing it the other way around. If anyone’s interested, I might organize group rides for the Golden Spike prize.

Just to clarify, “participant” for this purpose includes Friends of BAFS, unless otherwise specified by the sponsor. It’s an opportunity for those who don’t feel they can commit to being part of a team (or this year, who are unable to register due to the 250-person cap) to join in the fun. Instructions for becoming a Friend of BAFS can be found here.

Thank you! I edited my post.

To encourage more bikes on trains, and maybe something “fun” in the mix if the weather’s nasty, I’m offering the Golden Spike Award pointless prize.

    THE RULES

    1. Ride your bike to an active station where passengers board and alight. Location must have regularly scheduled passenger service. For example, the Vienna depot on the W&OD doesn’t count, neither does the old B&O station in Silver Spring. What constitutes “riding” to the station is on the honor system.
    2. Intercity (Amtrak or equivalent), commuter rail (MARC, VRE, etc), heavy rail (WMATA, etc.) and light rail transit (DC Streetcar, Baltimore light rail) all count. Must be steel wheel on steel rail. (I will make an exception for Montreal.) Trolley buses (i.e., there is no fixed guideway) don’t count. Airport people movers don’t count.
    3. Submissions to the forum must include a picture of the bike with a station sign.
    4. Each station sign submission is worth one point and must be unique (no repeats.)
    5. One submission per day of Freezing Saddles.
    6. BONUS POINTS: board the train or light rail vehicle with your bike from one station and alight at another station. In that case you will claim three points. Must post a picture of your bike with the start station sign, end station sign, and your bike aboard the train to claim the three points.
    7. BONUS POINT trips must be unique, but you could, for instance, board the Red Line at Silver Spring and ride to Union Station (three points) and the next day ride from Silver Spring to Rhode Island Ave and claim another three points.
    8. Tie-breaking method will be at the sole discretion of the prize sponsor.

Thanks for sponsoring this prize. Can the cyclists use this hashtag to mark their rides on Strava? #goldenspike

I offered this prize last year to help 1st timers stay motivated when it becomes a slog. In the end, it didn’t really work, so I’m not inclined to do it again this year. Instead, I’ll be fully employed with Serdar managing the photo challenge. We’re adding a fun/challenging twist this year. All details will be revealed on December 15!

p.s. If anyone else wants to offer a First Timers prize, there are a lot of them this year – so feel free to create your own adventure for them! I have no claim on it.

This has been my favorite pointless prize game since I started doing Freezing Saddles two years ago. Boomer, the sponsor of the game for at least the past 2 years, has graciously passed it off to me. I’m looking forward to seeing entries from you! More information on “the rules,” etc., to follow soon!

    Thank you for volunteering, Karen!

That was my very first b(oat)ike to work day in the DC area! Wow. Time really does move quickly these days.

Looking forward to my first Bike to Work Day at my new job. Hitting up the “unofficial” Falls Church stop at 6:30, then heading to the Rosslyn and Georgetown stops.

    Congratulations on your new job!
