ParticipantRode from Glebe Road & South Meade St to Georgetown this morning. From Glebe Rd to MVT it was very good. Alexandria did an excellent job on the 4MR detour. Once you hit MVT though, is where the trouble starts. There are several patches where there is ice as hard as rock, so you better walk those if you plan to head that way. From Gravelly Point to the 14th St Bridge is very much rideable. From then on, to Georgetown, you are better off walking most of the way. Trollheim is a mess, I don’t think even a fat bike can pass through there. The whole way is doable, just take your time on ice patches (you better walk those, that ice is very tricky).

ParticipantWill be there too. 20s looking guy with a black Kestrel with red handle tape. Probably with black and yellow jersey

Participant10:30 on Monday sounds good!
My name is William. I live close to Shirlington. I commute every day about 8 miles one way to Georgetown. I haven’t been riding much on long rides so I feel a bit out of shape (I struggled on the Custis hills last time out). I started riding more frequently since last March and I am pretty much addicted by now. I ride a Kestrel road bike for my fun/fast rides, but commute on a single speed cross bike. It is my first FS and I don’t like the cold, but I am very competitive, so I will really try to do the sleaze ride even on really cold days.

After all my “winter is coming” strava ride titles, I could hardly object
Looks like QOTM will be heading to the distant northlands on Monday, so I will be up for a group ride (patience with me, I have never been fast, and am a bit out of shape after not riding for a week) I note a couple of y’all are from PWC. Would Forge or Fair Winds Brewery make a destination to ride to (or from) on the Cross County Trail? I will be car free that day, so will likely ride the whole way via either Kingstowne or via the CCT from Annandale. Or we could do a ride closer to me, such as the Arlington loop (which tends to work for riders of different levels)
I am up for a group ride on Monday. The Arlington loop is very convenient for me since I live Arlington, but can travel to a close vecinity.

ParticipantHi all! Thanks for organizing. I have been busy lately, but will try to engage more.
What about “White Walkers” from Game of Thrones?

Looks like bobco85’s edit was effective.
Here’s another comment. Maybe it would make sense for staff to spend a little time in the area affected by a major trail closure considering the clearness of communication of the detour and the alternatives. Last night it was cold and I was late for a meeting and on a CaBi. I didn’t feel like taking the long detour so I thought I would see how bad Glebe was for the 3 blocks. Feeling vulnerable with the speeding cars, I hopped onto the sidewalk. In one stretch, the untrimmed bushes took away about half the width of the already slim sidewalk. I know that there are bigger fish to fry in the cycling world, but I also wonder how much consideration is given to the impacts of a closure.

I see people entering the closed trail and coming out of it all the time. Especially when it gets dark… Not sure how bad it is, but some people love to not follow rules.

ParticipantI passed around there at 5:30ish. Police were at the scene. Didn’t know what was going on, and it was dark, but it looked like everything was being handled well.

ParticipantCaught a bug straight on my throat while going 20mph or so. Warm Fall evenings bring the bugs out! I almost choked

ParticipantWent really slow going North bound through trollheim this morning and allowed myself at least 20ft from a cyclist that was ahead of me. Shook my head to a speedy cyclist that was going South bound at the start of the bridge. There should be signs that this is actually a skating rink when it is wet.

ParticipantI fell at the turn going North this morning. I was in the floor in a matter of a second. I usually take it slow there, and break at the turn to not crash against incoming cyclists. Luckily no one was around and I got minor scratches. I didn’t know this was a common spot to wipeout when it rains.

ParticipantI agree that taking away the medals will do anything to change the behavior. As long as there are open roads, people will try to ride as fast as they can just to prove themselves.
This was my first ride riding with people. From the start I knew that people take it very seriously, so I was a bit nervous. After seeing the first accident, I decided to take it more safe. This included slowing down on curves and going downhill, and not cutting people off. I pushed it going uphill to make up for it and I still averaged 21mph at the end. You can ride safe, have fun and still complete the 6 laps.

Thank you for the update. Glad she is in stable condition. Scary stuff.

But do we know anything about what happened to cause the crash?
At that downhill, every one was trying to pass everyone, so people were going 25-30mph+ very close to each other in very disorganized lines. My guess is that she lost control of the bike at the end of the hill or someone tried to pass her and hit her bike. After we were waiting for the ride to restart, I heard people cheering in the front, so I am hoping that she woke up, but that was 10-15 minutes after it happened. I have looked online to find any info, but couldn’t find anything, so I hope she was able to make it.

ParticipantCrowded W&OD and Custis this AM with lots of speedsters (got passed 3 times!). Guy yelled at me for not hearing my pass (voice can get coarse sometimes). Maybe I should buy a bell.

In Virginia, yes (according to this article which is easier to find than the code itself), but I’d like to be proven wrong on this one.
Thank you for the article. Their follow up article says that the courts have a checkbox to record it as a bicycle, which should not receive demerit points. The courts might record wrongly, in which case the DMV must be notified.
