ParticipantJust moved out of this area. I used to like biking on it when the bridge opened for just one lane. My brain for some reason never adjusted, so I did merge into incoming traffic after the gas station when both lanes opened, which was kind of dangerous. If you want to ride safely, you are basically stuck to the sidewalk until you are at Valley drive. You have to dodge people walking in the sidewalk just getting out of a bus sometimes. I think restricting the street to one lane for that one block would work wonders, but doubt that will happen.

Riding through this evening with the rain, you can see just how poorly this job was done. There were three large pools of water, one of which was at least a foot deep, at different points in the new section, which are from obvious grading problems in the construction. Considering there weren’t pools of water under Mt Vernon or Glebe Road on 4MR, I imagine this will be a lot worse in bigger rain events.
I thought this project was done poorly to begin with, but what came out of this is worse than what was there before. The developer either did this on the cheap or had no idea what they were doing.
Yeah. I commute through here every day and I am not quite sure how this is better both aesthetically and functionality wise. The pools were even worse after it was first built, so I am really hoping it has something to do with drainage that they will fix at the other side of the fence.

I don’t need a full time EBike, just for some trips.
I have an electron wheel collecting dust in my closet. I used it a couple of times, but decided that electric bikes take out of all the fun of riding a bike. I can sell it if interested.

ParticipantI have seen someone who commutes from Burke and parks on the w&od at merrifield. He parks here. I believe it is totally legal.

ParticipantThis situation reminds me of all the near misses that I see on a regular basis on the Walter Reed Dr. and George Mason Dr. intersections of the W&OD, even when you have the “right of way.” I am pretty sure they’ll always point to VA Code ยง46.2-924 if you are involved in an accident.

Did those speed bumps look something like this? It’s protecting an electrical cable conduit and for the past couple months the sides of the trail were fenced in. Notice how now riders just go around it and ride over the conduit in the grass. This is next to the BMW/Mini dealer in Nieder-Eschbach and across from where a new Tankstelle is being built.
Kinda as narrow, but a bit higher and with a sharper tip. I saw them when they placed it quickly and as far as I know, there was no cable underneath.
But yeah, it looks like it has been gone for the past couple mornings. I hope they realized how dangerous its placement was.

Yup, I went down on that f’ing speed bump.
Ugh. Sorry to hear. I figured it wouldn’t take long before it would cause people to fall. My skinny tires did not approve even though I almost came to a complete stop before it.

ParticipantFYI. At the construction site near the Memorial Bridge on the MVT, they placed jersey barriers that effectively create blind corners.
They were also placing 4 inch high speed bumps after such blind corners this morning.

These would be great. But if I interpret the map correctly, the blue roads are not on the paving schedule but rather happen to serve as boundaries between maintenance zones. Glebe would be VDOT territory anyway.
Sigh. I believe you are right.

ParticipantAdd a lane from South Glebe Rd from 4MR trail to S Walter Reed. Or at least from 24th Street to S Walter Reed.
Also, assess crosswalk safety at the ramps to 395. Even pedestrians have a hard time crossing there.

It is an option for going home at night. Just not a great option either since it requires me to wait at a very long and unpredictable light, and then also go through the “I hope right turners don’t hit me” dance, or over-shoot the bridge by going over, turning around on a sidewalk, and getting into the lane.
I hate those 2 lights on Glebe. However, if you are already on the 4MR trail, you can go through the underpass on Glebe and make a U-turn at the sidewalk on S Four Mile Run Dr to get to the bridge. It totally avoids the light.

(and what is up with those sections of ground along the MVT north and south of the bridge. They seep water long, long after a rain, as if there are underground springs there ).
It has been like that since like July last year. There are a couple of drains just above on the GWP. They might be malfunctioning or just overflowing.

Just in case anyone was wondering: Trollheim and TR Bridge are clear! (There’s some snow on the Trollheim, but plenty of space to ride).
FYI, There is also a large tree branch across Trollheim just after the entrance going north. It didn’t fall to the ground and it gives you about a 5 feet clearance. It is perfectly noticeable, but it could surprise you under low light conditions.

ParticipantThe trail next to 27/Washington Blvd was clear from Columbia Pike all the way to Arlington Memorial Bridge. MVT from Arlington Memorial through Trollheim was really bad. I tried to put up a good fight riding it on my 32s, but on hindsight, it should have been faster walking it.
Rosslyn hill on Custis was clear, except for a patch between the sound wall.
