I have only one bike, so I used it!

The Space Horse worked just fine with Schwalbe Marathon Mondial 35mm tires and a light hand to feather the cantilever brakes well in advance of hard turns.

The 158-mile route was a wild ride with a huge range of conditions, from fast, paved downhills in the fog to an abandoned stretch of forest service road ridable only with a mountain bike (or, as we discovered, a highly modified Subaru). It was also a wonderful tour of that part of West Virginia.

In good weather, it undoubtedly goes well beyond “design capacity” for the number of walkers & cyclists that pour onto it, particularly along certain stretches…
But when you add into that mix the particular cyclists who don’t really want to follow the rules of the road (whether common sense rules, or posted rules) it does increase risk to other users, while also presenting a horrible “cyclists P.R.” issue, lumping all of us riders in with a subset of the bad apples.

Yes, well this is just the tribal bikes vs. cars problem. There’s simply a ton of crap public behavior in this city.

As for overcapacity, it seems like the solution is to improve the trail rather than inconvenience users.

Also, for anyone contemplating the two-day ride, it seems there will be a shuttle to ferry camping gear from the ride start to the Day 1 ending point in Davis. I’m guessing they’ll also shuttle gear back to the start after camping but that’s not explicitly mentioned in the e-mail. So, if a worry about how to carry your gear is an obstacle to registering, looks like it won’t be an issue. Bikepacking without the packing!

For people who like to know what they’re clicking on, this story says the bicycle industry in the US is worried about declining numbers of children who are riding, the impact of Chinese tariffs, and overall declining numbers of regular cyclists.

Unfortunately I don’t see any indication that NPS is working to repair the trail damage that is forcing everyone through the tunnel.

I absolutely love e-scooters. As a cyclist, I am finally not the most-hated mode user. People really seem to enjoy complaining about them.

Ha! Just wait for the pogo sticks!!

Looks like a fun route, and there there will be quite a bit of new territory for me, like Lake Barcroft. I also signed up for the volunteer night on 6/11 so hope to see a few of you there, too!

Beginning at 6 a.m. on Saturday, April 27, Wise Road NW between Oregon Avenue NW and Beach Drive NW will close to drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists until fall. The closure is to allow construction on Beach Drive and to completely resurface Wise Road. The road will stay closed until the Beach Drive Rehabilitation project is complete. The project is scheduled to end in fall 2019.

There are some epic potholes on that stretch of road. I was hoping NPS would just let nature take its course and the road would go to gravel.

What’s interesting about this story is that the writer wasn’t even doing what most of us consider to be “road riding.” He was in a wide shoulder or bike lane, seemingly on a road with a relatively low speed limit, and on it for only a half mile between stretches of dirt. On the rare occasions that I head out in the countryside on my bike in the U.S., it’s on roads with limits of 55+ and narrow or no shoulder. I’ve pretty much decided to avoid that style of riding. The countryside is beautiful but I just can’t relax enough to enjoy those rides. Ironically the road riding was substantially better in India, where there are country roads where traffic goes slow. Almost everything in the U.S. is fast, fast, fast.

Riding. They’re fine for walking but do crunch on uneven pavement.

My friend told me my Schwalbe Marathon Mondials may see me into old age. Wrestling these onto the rims certainly made me feel like an old man.

For future reference – if you do a lot of walking in your bike shoes, the Giro Rumble VR might be the greatest shoes ever made. The soles aren’t as firm as serious road shoes, so they’re not a good choice if you’re maximizing performance. But if you’re going to be walking, they’re fantastic. I’ve actually forgotten I was wearing bike shoes on more than one occasion.

I have around 4,000 miles on mine and they’re still in pretty good shape.
